Default 87 Toyota Van manual trans. clutch

Hey, new here, and desperate. I have an 87 Toyota Van, with a manual transmission. The clutch pedal will not disengage the clutch while the van is started. When not started, the van goes into gear but the pedal is still mush. It will take off - the wheels spin - if you start it in gear. But then won't shift.

I checked the clutch cable - it seems to be connected, but I don't know what else to check. I can't find a manual for it either, and the auto parts guys said maybe it's a hydraulics problem, and to look for a reservoir that may be low or leaking, but I can't seem to find one. Or any way to put fluid in it, period.

Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

George - The Fish Genius

There is no clutch cable. You probably felt the speedo cable.
It uses a hydraulic clutch master cylinder and a hydraulic slave cylinder.

Remove negative battery cable
Remove The instument finish panel (5 screws)
Remove combination meter (speedo head assy)
Remove air ducts #1/2/3/

Now you can see the clutch master cylinder, it gets brake fluid from the brake master cylinder. Look at the top of the clutch pedal is there fluid?
Look under the vehicle and find the clutch slave cylinder. Is it leaking?

Hope this helps

Use a helper
1 pumps the pedal and keeps the fluid level up in the resovoir

1 opens the bleeder screw

Use a clear bottle and a small rubber hose on the vleeder screw on the slave cylinder (undervehicle)

If the system has a mush pedal as you describe , you probably need a clutch master and you might as well change the slave cylinder too.

If there are no leaks, you've bled the systemand the pedal still feels funny then the clutch pressure plate may have gone south.

Good Luck

p.s. YES, I remember these vans when new
