Question Echo Oil Leak

Hello,

I just purchased a 2000 Echo, Auto, that might have a rear engine seal leak. When I purchased the car it was clean underneath but after driving it a while I have noticed oil on the bottom of the engine around the area where the trans and engine meet. There is a rubber rectangular inspection plug also in the area.

I would like to know if anybody else has experienced this, could it be something simpler and easier to fix. I have a good knowledge of mechanics and I am not afraid to spend a few evenings repairing this myself unless its a job that requires several special tools.

Thanks

Yo VERN!! Thought I had found a possible solution until I saw where the post was from. Did you look at the "check engine light" post yet. You might want to clean yours out as well. I did.

Hey Vern,
Which check engine light thread? I have read through so many threads on so many boards its not funny. I have been watching the oil level and it doesnt seem to be losing oil. So that means the leak is really small or its not oil and its some other type of fluid. Tranny? Maybe? Will look into it later. I ended up stripping the interior today even the flooring! The drivers side was soaking wet and I was not sure where it was coming from. THe rear drivers side passenger foot well was really wet. Found it to be the small bolt the is welded to the floor was bent back and it created a hole in the floor. I am going to straighten it out and TIG it back together. The drivers foot well? It could be from the gray rocker panel cover not being properly installed and all the water spray finding its way threough the open holes. I took that off today and I am getting ready to order the missing bolts and what not.

While I have the interior out I am going to work on some of the rattles and shampoo the interior. Maybe I can get the heel marks off the headliner!

Later Gator

Look down about 4 lines in the discussion thread. There is on titled 2000 echo check engine light. There are a few pdf files showing how to clean (take apart) the throttle body and such.

I have a 2000 Echo and yes this sounds like the same leak I encountered at around 70000 miles or so. The rectangular plug on the joint where the transmission meets the engine was covered in oil. I had to have the rear main seal replaced (Under Warranty of course). I now have 143000 miles with no more leaks. I hope this helped you some.
