Default Previa '92 - needs a SADD shaft?

Our 14 year old Previa with 216K has had increased engine noise with acceleration for the past few months. Our dealer suggested changing the SADD shaft to possibly fix the problem (for $1294). My wife was told that the car could just stop dead if the shaft went.

I read (on this site) that the SADD shaft usually causes a clattering sound at parking lot speeds (I have not noticed this). Any way to be more certain that the SADD shaft needs replacement? Will it ruin the car if it goes? It's been a great car, but this is a lot of money (especially if it doesn't work).

Thanks for any suggestions.

I have never used them, but I have been told that Armstrong Distributors makes a kit to replace the worn out bushings for the couplers on each end of the SADS shaft
