Default fuel and temp guages not working

on 1988 toyota truck 4x4, with 22re. They both went out at same time. all fuses seem to be good. I need to know where the sensors are so I can trace wires.

Okay, The guages are working sometimes and not other times....????? No rhyme or reason to why.

My vintage (1974) Toyota Corona has exactly the same symptoms - sometimes the temp and gas gauges work fine and sometimes they both die at exactly the same time, yet everything else electrical on the car still works when these two gauges die.
