I have a chance to buy a 1982 4x4 with a carbed 22-re, runs great, everything on the drivetrain works, and it has almost new 33x12.5 mud tires on it. The only thing the truck needs is new valve stem seals. It smokes a little when you first start it up, and it fouls out plugs every once in a while, but other than that everything is good.
The body is not horrible, but it does have its share of rust.. I'm not worried about the body though, if I get it its gonna get a flatbed, and the fenders will be trimmed...
The solid front axel is my driving point on the truck. I have always wanted a early 80's yota truck, but they are HARD to find in any kind of decent shape.
From everyone's experiences, is 2,000 a decent price for the truck? Thats a number that me and the current owner were tossing around, and I think thats about as low as he's going to go.

Hard to say without seeing the truck but that does not sound unreasonable. That engine is pretty bullet proof so if you fix the valves it should go for a long time.
My neighbor just bought a 1984 for $2500, it was in poor condition (oil leaks, coolant leaks, slipping clutch, noisey timing chain), but it ran. The body is ok but the paint is oxidized, and it has fairly new 33's.
I just put $1000 of parts into it. We traded out labor and he helped me too.
He had it detailed when we were done and its now a great looking and running truck. Total spent approx $3750.
I told him if he evers wants to sell it to hit me up. He gave it to his oldest son who just got his license.
Sounds like a good price to me, but expect to spend another few $$$ to bring its upkeep to date and make it "yours".

Well, I'm gonna eventually be putting a lot of $$$ into it. This one is going to be a dedicated trail rig. I'm going to lift it, chop the frame, flatbed, 35's or 36's along with a lot of other goodies. I went and looked at it again yesterday to really dig through it and was again impressed. Other than the bed being pretty much shot, there is not a thing wrong. My favorite part: There is not a single rust hole in the doors or cab anywhere.

Well I didn't end up picking it up today. I had to work late, as did the trucks current owner. I'm headed out of town tomorrow, so it'll be monday before I get it
I bought my 1993 T100 4x4 SR5 about six months ago for $1700. All I have done to it is put a seat cover on it and had the transmission flushed. It did not want to go into four gear. Anyway it runs great and I have used it a lot since I just moved. I had it out four wheeling this past weekend and it did great.
The body is a little rough but not much rust. It came with almost new 31" all terrains. I think I got a great deal.
I would want $2000 for my baby... 1984 4runner (original owner)
You could get WAY more for a solid axle 4 runner in decent shape.
Well I finally picked the truck up. It was about 9 last night when I got it home, so I haven't been able to do anything with it yet. It did run and drive great on the way home, just a little smoke every now and then from the bad valve seals. Hopefully today I'll be able to tackle those and put a new valve cover gasket in while I'm at it.
The next project is a lil suspension work. The leaf spring bushings are pretty much gone, so I'm gonna fab up some new shackles and replace all the bushings...
Ok, update on the truck. I drove the truck around for a few days, just to get the feel of it and make sure that everything was doing what it is supposed to do. After getting comfortable with it, I started playin around a little bit, well, a lot a bit.
In the middle of a mud hole, where the mud was about 4-5" below my door handle, the headgasket kamakazied. Ended up having to get winched out of the hole. I got a ride home and got the tundra and my flatbed trailer and took her home.
Progress so far:
New head gasket
Rebuilt entire head
rebuilt carburetor
drain/flush/refill cooling system
ported intake manifold
removed ALL underhood clutter other than what is required for the truck to run
New plugs and wires
Drain, flush, and refilled the engine, tranny, transfer case, and both diffs
Added a old school sun super tach II (Truck didn't come with a tach)
Added water temp, voltage, and oil pressure gauges.
New belts and hoses
Reset timing
new bushings on the shifter
Thats all the main stuff. I'm pretty much going through the whole truck top to bottom and rewiring what needs it, and cleaning up and tuning up everything. I'm almost done with this stage of fun.
My next project is going to be lift. I finally got my grimey hands on my very own Millermatic mig welder, so the customization can begin. I am thinking about moving the rear springs to the front, relocating the frame mount, and improving the shackle assembly. On the back I'm thinking about a set of 62" chevy 1/2 ton leafs with custom mounts and shackles.
I'm also going to remove the bed, bob the frame right behind the shackles and start on the flatbed/exo cage project, but all that has to wait untill I can find a good tubing bender.
I have lots of plans, not enought time, and certainly not enough $$$, But it'll all come together eventually.
WOO HOO!!! I got to do some wheelin this morning, and the truck did great. I went down the same trail that I blew the head gasket on, and made it through everything. I only came close to getting stuck once, but with a little clutch and skinny pedal action it pulled on through.
I do still have one problem though, when going slow on the trail, the truck still tries to run hot. If I'm on the pavement doing 25-30+ it does perfect, stays right around 180-190, but it can get up to 220-230 going slow for any amount of time. I keep a couple 5 gallon jugs of water with me, and just pour a little over the radiator when it starts to get too hot, and that cools it down for another 10-15 minutes. I guess its time for a new radiator, and maybe a e-fan setup...
