Default Thinking of buying the Older Truck, please help

Hi Guys,

I have a 2007 Tundra that I am getting rid off (insurance issues) and I want to get something older for work (construction). Older Toyota Trucks have never been on my radar until now. I've read somewhere that the older trucks had a 2000lbs+ payload (which is awesome) and come in a 8ft box - which I need for work. I would like to have some room behind the back seat so extended cab model is preffered

Mostly I will be using the truck to haul building materials, and I don't need a payload of more than 2000lbs. I will be towing a boat occasionally - no more than 5,000lbs.

Basically I don't know where to start with my search and research. Can any of you guys point me in the right direction? Something about the history of the truck, what to look for? etc?

Also, I would like to swap out the original powertrain and put a new Toyota diesel with a new Tranny. Has anyone done this before?

Thanks in advance,
I look forward to your replies.
~Andy

I could be wrong but...

I don't believe that Toyota made an extended cab with an 8' box in the older trucks. You either got an extended cab or an 8' box with a single cab. I think owners with the extended cab trucks got roof racks that allowed them to carry the longer stuff or used an extender with the tailgate down. Or you could have the bed extended...kinda like how people have their truck beds bobbed.

I've got a T100 standard cab with the 8' box that suits me fine. Not a lot of interior space fer stuff or a lot of power fer the 3.slow that's in it but then again...I don't carry a bunch of construction stuff around.

Did you need 4x4 capability? Auto or manual? Have you looked at the first gen Tundras? You could probably take one of the T100 extended cabs and mod that out with a V8 and extending the bed...guess it will depend on how soon you need it and what yer willing to pay fer it.

Diesel swaps aren't that prevalent...yet.
