Out-of-Production Trucks & SUVsGeneral discussion forum for out of production Toyota truck and SUV models. (RAV4-EV, T100 and Truck)
This is a discussion thread titled "1994 Toyota Pickup 4x4-Any good?", within the Out-of-Production Trucks & SUVs forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
All of the older Toyota trucks were very good and quite reliable. My first Toyota was a 1981 Hilux 2WD truck with the 22R 4 cyl engine and it was a great truck, I put over 200K miles on it before I traded it for a brand new 1988 Toyota extra cab 4x4 also with the 22R 4 cyl. My 88 Toyota 4x4 had almost 300K miles when I finally retired it in the fall 2004 when I bought my current 05 Tundra AC TRD 4x4. The friend I sold my 88 4x4 to is still driving it and recently did some body work and repaint and it looks like new again and still runs great. The 4 cyl 22R engines are very reliable but in my experience are also prone to headgasket failure. I had to do the headgaskets on BOTH my 81 and my 88 trucks. Other than that they were pretty much bulletproof and the headgaskets BTW didn't need replacing until the trucks had many miles on them. One thing though is for a small truck with a 4 cyl engine I was not really impressed with the mileage. The 81 2WD was actually pretty good but the 88 4x4 was not that great, unless I drove it at 55 MPH it had trouble getting any better than 20 MPG. Actually when it was working a little like if I was pulling my small boat or fighting a head wind it only got about 15 or 16 MPG, same as my Tundra gets under the same conditions and the Tundra is much bigger with A LOT more power. They were all good trucks but if you are looking to get an older one to mod for off roading the 1985 and older solid front axle trucks would be a good choice as lift mods are simpler and cheaper to do.
I have a '92 2wd. It had the head gasket replaced as part of a recall; I think it was at around 60K. It's a V6 and it's a real gas hog. I had an '84 with a 4 cylinder that was much better on gas. Both of them rusted. I sold the '84, and replaced the box on the '92 because of it. Now the right front fender has rust. I would buy a '94 4x4 in a second if I didn't already have the '92 one paid for. High miles aren't the problem. It's the rust, here in Wisconsin.

I have a 94 2x4 and it is great. These trucks are one of the most reliable toyotas you can get. I would suggest staying away from the 3.0. It is a great motor but does have issues with Headgaskets, Leaking Power steering pumps and I believe are not that great on gas. Do not get me wrong the 3.0 is a good motor but compared to the 4 cyl it is not as good. I get 25 mpg with the lift and tires.
Here is my 94. NOTHING but oil changes and air cleaners.

not familar with 94 but i am with the 93 PU, i have a DD with 238K miles on it and i got it with 140K on it and i have spent around 4K on maintenance on it during the 98K miles i have put on it and it's only in need of new brake calipers. Done the timing belt, clutch, brakes, tires x 3, motor still strong as all 3.0 motors were. It gets 20MPG and AC works great, never found a cheap Toyota replacement part but i have found a dealership that gives me 25% off on parts and 10% on labor. Keeps my hands clean and my back strong! Looks nothing like that pretty blue one but i would not sell mine for anything less than 5500.00 or i will drive it, that Blue one could get upward of 6 to 7 K if not in a hurry to sell but a cherry like that blue one would stay in Garage. Too nice to beat up!!
