Unhappy 1980 Toyota P/U, Carb Problems

Hey everyone!

I bought a 1980 Toyota SR5 P/U (2wd, 5spd, 20R engine) from an Auction Sale about a month ago. It was taken or abandond by the previous owner so the history is unknown, it passed the local inspection with only some patching of rust.

My only problem is, when i got it, i put a battery and 10bux worth of gas in the tank, tried to start it but to no avail. Ended up being that the needle was stuck in the carb, few taps with a hammer and it was running in no time! It ran great but seemed to idle very very ritch and when i shut it off hot i couldnt get it started unless i held my foot to the floor and cranked it for about 2mins. Turned out not to be the Choke (has the water heated choke on it) so i figured a good carb re-build is in order. Picked up a Kit for the carb and installed it after cleaning everything so it was spotless. put it all back on and I have no clue where the vac lines go "DOH" no vac diagram i cap off all of the ports and start the truck up. well needless to say i have the same darn problem ecept for now it doesnt want to idle. no vac. leaks (will pull 19" of vac.)

Runs extreemely ritch (i changed the oil, havent drivin it more than 5miles, messed around with the carb, etc and it reaks of gas so i have to change that again. It seems to leak gas down the intake when shut off (this is my guess b/c its hard to start) i have the float level so the gas is half way up the sight glass in the carb.

I'm to my whits end on this one, this is my first toyota (used to playing with BigBlock Mopars and Holley Carbs).

I had a 81 P/U and it had a different carb problem sometimes would not idle. Low speed idle jet was getting plugged with rust I think.

You said the oil smells like gas. It might be that the fuel pump is leaking and pumping fuel into the crankcase. It's mounted on the top front of the engine.

I think i've figured out why its running so rich and it must be tied in with the idle situations. When the truck is shut off you can see gas leaking down the secondary thottle bore (literally kind of like a streem all the way down the bore onto the blade and slowly leeking form there into the intake)

now i'm "figuring" that must be either comming from a Warped carburator main body or from the boosters some how.. are there supposed to be any check valves (little ball bearings in any of the booster holes?)

hmmm any thoughts on this? i'm tempted to say screw it and either buy a new "rebuilt" carb (at the very pricey expense of 288bux plus tax, keep in mind thats cdn) or make an adaptor to mount a 2bbl Carter BBD or Holley 2210 onto this intake (not something i have the time for)
