Worth a try
If you pull the boot inside the cab you will see 4 to 6 bolts holding a a plate on the top of the tranny that the shifter actually goes thru. take these bolts out and on the tip of the shifter there (inside the trans) there is a plastic bushing that pushes on to the round ball at the tip. This part is cheap and wears out. Try replacing this bushing and then put back together. You will have to make sure the shifter goes back in the same way you took it out so take note when removing. If this does not help then it is probably an internal issue. If your shifter was real sloppy while in gear then this could be the issue.
Any ?'s let me know.
90's are in my opinion the best ever built. good suspension, frames, engines (Low power tho) the 3.0 six cylinder has it's issues but still a good vehicle.
