'97 T100 problems

My father-in-law has a '97 T100 SR5 truck that he bought new. It only has about 38,000 miles on it. He has a two nagging problems with it. The first is that the light in the dashboard is out, making it impossible to see the speedometer at night. (It is not the fuse) Also, it is hard to put the transmission in "Park". You have to force it so that the engine will start. Has anyone else had these types of problems? If so, what does it take to fix them? Any insight will be appreciated.

The light should be just a bulb change.
The transmission is another story.

38K is super low miles for any '97.
