Default Re: Engine oil in coolant-22R

Hi Guys

Just found the forum. My 91 P/u (230,000, 22R, 5 speed) has also been going through coolant for a while without any other symptons. On Friday, it got hot (middle of temp gauge) and I couldn't keep coolant in the overflow. Yesterday I pulled the cap and there was the goo in the coolant and worse, there was the "mud" on the dipstick.

Could it be just a gasket or ??

thx

bob

I have the same issue. My friend brought his 95 P/U over. Said it got 3/4 the way hot, he pulled over and there was coolant in the oil. He had it towed to the shop and they #1 & #4 pistons were steam cleaned and that it would need a new engine. It has 330,000 miles on it.

I did a compression test on it the results were 180 psi in all the cylinders (engine cold obviously).

Now after reading this thread, it looks like maybe I have a crack in the exhaust ports on 1 and 4. Is that correct? Would a machine shop be able to check the head for cracks?

Also, I think I might have the timing chain issue as well. I will check that later today when I start tearing it apart to find out.

But any help would be great. Would it be worth fixing or just find a used motor?

Check the timing chain guide and timing chain cover...slack in the chain may have eaten through the timing chain cover.

You can find new aftermarket timing chain covers fer cheap on ebay or the commercial vendors like AutoZone, RockAuto, etc...

The 22R/RE are easily rebuilt...yer gonna have to check the heads. Are you sure the radiator didn't crack and lose coolant through that?

Hey guys. SOld my 07 tundra and last week purchased a 90 x-cab, 3.0L v-6 with 84,000 miles. Truck had not been serviced in about 10 years. Anyway, i experienced exactly what you all have been discussing. Didnt think the 22R experienced these issues, but the 3VZ is infamous for it. Dealers actually replaced first head gasket free, but the gaskets were usually not of new design. My probs started with gunk in overflow, no water in the oil but radiator looked bad. Started it up monday, white smoke/steam coming from exhaust pipe, and radiator emptied, overflow filled with oily looking crap. Took motor apart today, head gasket had swelled tremendously and was leaking badly. No outside signs of leaks on the ground though, all interior leaking. Oil looked like a YooHoo. Getting this all done by a good buddy of mine who has done over a 100 of the 3VZ headgaskets so he will get it right. Also doing water pump, thermostat, timing belt kit, head bolts, all gaskets possible, maybe a new radiator but it really doesnt look so bad. Tomorrow the heads come off, and i should have a little more info on the engine condition. This motor had the free replacement head gasket done, but it was done poorly.
