I'm not sure if my dad will be willing to go cutting into the wiring on his truck, but I passed the info on to him. I'll let you know if he tries it, I know he won't have time until at least tomorrow.
Thanks for the help.

there should be a manufactsure date on the drivers door and on the computer to see when they where both made. look there first.

Well, my dad finally had it towed to a garage and they seem pretty confident that they've solved the problem. The airflow sensor is corroded, so they've ordered a new one. I guess you can't say for sure that a new sensor will fix the problem, but it sounds reasonable to me. I'm not sure when they'll have the part, but I'll post back with the results.

It's confirmed, the whole problem was a corroded airflow sensor. The truck has been running fine (other than needing a valve adjustment) ever since they replaced the sensor.
Thanks everyone for the help. We had checked the wiring and everything, but it just never occurred to us to check the sensor itself.
