Out-of-Production Trucks & SUVsGeneral discussion forum for out of production Toyota truck and SUV models. (RAV4-EV, T100 and Truck)
This is a discussion thread titled "BEWARE Eaton True Trac - bolts fall out", within the Out-of-Production Trucks & SUVs forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
Here's photos of my Eaton Truetrac which the bolts fell out of in under 10,000 miles destroying my entire rear end - truetrac = garbage, new ring and pinion = garbage, new bearings = garbage, housing = garbage, axles = garbage. Replacement of the third member alone will be in excess of $1500, plus axles, bearings etc.
There are NO safety locking devices on the 8 truetrac bolts!
Eaton refused warranty on this item which was clearly a defect in their design process.
Truck has a stock motor and stock tires and is run 100% on the street.
Guess I won’t be running Eaton truegarbage in my Toyota again.
In a conversation with Reider they say that while this is not a common occurance, it does occur with some regularity since there is no retention system.
sorry to hear about the damage, but that should have been making a terrible noise before it got that bad.

Nope, Eaton owns and makes the Truetrac. I too thought it was Detroit - it's not.
When I first heard it, yes it was a terrible squeeking.
I figured front wheelbearings. Pulled over and felt for temps. Couldn't find any hotspots, rolled it back and forth - no noise.
It was quite intermittnet and I was only 20 or so miles from home so I ran her on in.
OK this is what i found, the Detroit true track built in 2002 had two helical gears and each end cap had four #8 grade bolts coarse threads, apparently they had problems with the cheap bolts backing out, every one had a problem with the bolts backing out. well not everyone had a problem.
they redesigned it and now theres three gears and six bolts fine thread holding the end plates together. no problems with this one.
trachtech inc makes the Detroit trutrac formerly known as Detroit Automotive Products until 1979.
I'm interested because i was shopping for this LSD unit now I'm not so sure, Eaton LSD may be better or more reliable.
When I called Reider I said my Detroit TrueTrac has failed.
They said that it's not Detroit, it's eaton and gave me the tel#.
I called Eaton and they agreed it's their product, but denied any warranty.
Was it a sellout? I do not know, but them's the facts as best as I can tell you.
It is an Eaton product.
The bolts backed out.
This ended up destroying the entire third member.
Eaton Denied any warranty, even though they admit it's theirs and that there is some history of problems like this.
A company that sounds like PHabtech sold me some spindles which ended up breaking and bending ALOT and breaking alot. They said "To bad". I explained the design flaw which is because they put the axle below the lower A-Arm which in turn makes the lower A-Arm a pivot point pushing the upper A-Arm into the engine bay. This is exactly what happened. Well my wife works at a law firm and just had the boss write a "Nice" letter and I got my money back. Granted I had to pay for everything else but I got $400 back???

I dont own a tundra, I have an 88 yota. I will probably never in my life post another thread, but I was google searching about truetrac and i came upon this forum. I couldn't stand you all arguing about something you clearly have no idea what you are talking about . For one, obviously none of you know that Detroit is actually owned by, a branch of, a division of, whatever you want to call it by Eaton. If you dont believe it. Ever been on www.eaton.com??? Go there, look up "differential". Second, I believe that your bolts fell out of your diff, but is it because the True Trac is poorly designed? highly doubted . Did the thought ever cross your mind that they were not torqued properly when installed??? Whoever installed it probably torqued the bolt to the Eaton spec not the Detroit spec. haha, oh ya they are the same friggn' thing. How about, don't argue about something unless you are 100% sure you know what you are talking about. You sound like a bunch of women. "Its made by Eaton", "no its made by Detroit," you are all right all along, so stop arguing. it is very annoying.
By the way, sorry to hear about your diff. No probs with mine for 40000 miles, but i also installed it. go figure.

Differential, Eaton Detroit Truetrac, 30-Spline, Toyota, 4Runner/ Pickup, Each
Now I am really confused. It says both
Here is EATONS website and it calls it a DETROIT DETROIT TRUETRAC
I was thinking about one of these, as my TRD LSD just wont cut it anymore. It slips when I abuse it
I like the idea of the torsion gears
