Default 92 truck engine replacement

Hi y'all. Sorry to start off with so little info, but I'm still gathering all my facts on this truck. My girlfriend has a 92 toyota 4x4 truck which needs a new engine (4 cyl.). Once I get the VIN # from her so I can get all the specifics on it I will be able to move forward a little better. Anyway, the body is pretty solid, and the rest of the driveline appears to be in useable shape, so I thought it may be a good idea to try and locate a replacement engine. Any thoughts on an approximate price range?
Also, anyone have a suggestion as to a retailer who sells remanufactured engines/longblocks?
What about interchangeability with a newer engine (and will it be a pain to install a newer ECU for the newer engine)?
How hard would it be to swap in a V-6 (correct year or newer model)?

Any help would be much appreciated (I have to get her out of the piece of crap Volvo before it leaves her stranded).

We got one from a roll over at a junk yard for $700. You can use any of the 22r's from 89 to 95. You can go to a newer motor but you will need to fab motor mounts and rewire the whole truck and use the new computer and harness. BIG hassle.

You do not want to put the 3.0 motor in because you currently have the best motor Toyota ever made in that truck. A newer V6 like the 3.4 would be awesome. I have seen it done many times. BUT as stated you would need the motor, tranny, computer, harness, fuel tank, air intkae and others and it would be a HUGE hassle. Run the 22r.

Swapping in a 3.0 (3vze) or 3.4 (5vzfe) V6 Toyota engine from the pickup/tacoma (respectively) would require a lot more $$$ and work as you would need the transmissions from these vehicles as well. The 5 speed transmission in the 22RE 4 cyl is a different unit than the one in the V6 engines. However the 3.0 and 3.4 V6 transmissions are virtually the same and hence swapping in a 3.4 in place of a 3.0 is a common swap for 5 speed owners as you don't need the swap and it's basically bolt in.

I would just look for a replacement 22RE reman engine (why can't you rebuild your current offering by the way?) but I think, could be wrong, but think you could potentially swap in the 2.7 litre (3rzfe) 4 banger which is the "son" of the 22RE and this engine is found in 96-04 Tacoma 4x4's and pre-runners a. The 2.7 would be a great upgrade (but I'm not sure if the trannies bolt in or match up - that's what you'd have to check on as that would you lots of $$$/time) as you would get a dual overhead cam engine with 150 Horsepower and 177 ft-lbs of torque.
