We do art shows (our art is soapstone and alabaster vases, sculptures, etc.... good and heavy!) and are hoping to use our '97 T100 Extended cab Sr5 6' bed as our show vehicle. Here are the details:
PLUS, will be towing a small travel trailer (I'll get a transmission cooler put on the T100 and I'll use synthetic transmission oil and engine oil):
Loaded trailer weight: ~2,800
GCWR: 9,500
Actual GCW: ~8,620
So, from a black & white numbers perspective, we are within the limits... but, the T100 has a lot of miles on it! Am I crazy to think that we can use the T100 for this?
By the way, every mechanic who looks at this truck says it is in unbelievable shape. I was thinking of selling it and getting a used Tundra, but mechanics say I'm crazy to want to get rid of this truck. Plus, a used Tundra will cost me lots of $$.
I towed a trailer with a total weight of 2800 pounds loaded while I had 2000 pounds in the bed of my '96 4WD T100.
You must have a transmission cooler and keep the OD turned OFF.
I had custom Alcan rear leaf springs, Air-Lift bags a Hellwig anti sway bar in the rear. I also had HD T-bars up front and 31.5x10x15 Michelins.
I did this from 75K till 200K. I sold the T100 with 208K and drive my Tundra.
I no longer tow a trailer, but do haul heavy loads in the Tundra once a month.

So, whaddayathink?
Thanks,

The truck will be able to tow the weight you describe as long as you keep it out of overdrive. I have regularly towed my ~2,200 Lb pop up with my '95 T-100 (3.4L V6 5sp tranny), but it gives the truck a definite workout in the hills or when driving into a strong headwind. You would definitely benefit in the long run upgrading to a Tundra with the V8. Gas mileage between the Tundra and T-100 are similar when towing (expect to get somewhere around 12-13mpg). The Tundra just plays with anything under 3,000 Lbs. I now mostly tow with my Sequoia. I hardly even notice my pop-up behind the Sequoia, except for the lower gas mileage.
My T100 is about to turn over 145K miles and has been rock solid with the exception of the head gasket recall. Its a great truck, but just a little underpowered. If it would have had a V8 option, I would have no complaints.
