A small bit of noise is normal, but when you say it "goes away" that opens up several options.
Exhaust leak?
Piston slap?
Aftermarket oil filter?
Valve adjust?
Any chance for you to record the noise and post?
The 1997 T-100 is a great truck as is the 3.4 a really nice engine.

Hello,
I've got the same year truck and engine. I also had a noise that almost sounded like a loose heat shield but would go away after a few minutes. I had a hard time where the sound was coming from. It turned out to be a cracked flex plate in the tranny. If not taken care of it can cause much more damage. My truck has 145,000 miles on it. I hope this helps.
I was thinking an exhaust manifold tick.
A flex plate broken is for a AUTOMATIC, That is a very good suggestion.
Do you hear the noise under the hood or inside while driving?
Maybe time for a valve adjust?
Do it get worse IN DRIVE w A/C on?

The exhaust crossover pipe (behind the cyl heads) has a heat shield welded to it. They used to crack the welds and rattle at times too.

I have a 97 T100 SR5 4WD 3.4 with the same noise. I think I narrowed it down to the cross over pipe. I was in an accident approx 2 years ago and the noise reared its annoying head about 6 months later. I have cut away some of the heat shield and it seemed to have gone away for awhile, but it has come back. I plan on taking the pipe off for better examination. BTW Nice '02
