Was this engine rushed into service in an attemtp to save the T100 from complete failure or was this something that was planned from the beginning? Was this engine ready for the Tacoma and 4Runner or was the 3.0 going to be used a while longer?

Obviously the 3.4 was/is a great engine, but it just seems strange that Toyota launched the T100 with the weak 3.0 only to quickly put in the 3.4 in 95 (two years later). Did they rush development with it?

This is one of Toyota's best ever V6's as far as I'm concerned. Extremely reliable, very very very few weak points if any, and pretty dang powerful for it's size. I don't think Toyota rushed development at all, and I think the T100 was an afterthought. The 3.0 3vze was Toyota's first V6. I think for their First V6 they did a descent job, but there was obviously some growing pains, small ones when compared to domestics issues, and so they learned, and improved, and the result was the 3.4 5vzfe V6.
