I'n new to this forum thing, so don't pick on me too bad. I have a 1986 Toyota 2WD pickup truck that has a 4 sp transmission. It's got about 150,000 miles on it. The clutch is slipping bad. I've replaced clutches in several other vehicles that I have owned over the years and didn't give a second though to tackling this one. I bought a kit with all the parts I needed and went to work. After I got everything unbolted, I was suprised to find that I could not get the transmission out from between the motor and the rear cross brace (welded to the frame). The transmission could not be moved back far enough to get the input shaft out of the clutch assembly because it hit the firewall. The back end could not be dropped down because of that welded brace. I even removed the top of the shifter box and tried rotating the transmission to the left and to the right. After more than six hours of wrestling with this transmission, needless to say, I was frustrated and discouraged.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how this transmission can be removed?

Drain trans.
Remove rear trans mount and bracket
Move trans back approx 3" and then twist it counter clockwise so the shift tower is now facing toward the drivers side of the vehicle.
slide trans back farther, lower bellhousing down past flywheeel and slide transmission out FWD to replace clutch.
Should be able to do this clutch in 30 minutes or less.

The best thing and first thing to do is to go purchase yourself the Haynes automotive repair manual for your truck! I also have an 86', and I would have been lost without the manual all of my years of ownership. Haynes book part number: 656. Any bookstore should have or can order, as well as some auto houses. And remember, mechanics is not a horse race, so take your time and it will be done right the first time. Also, you'll need to know the torque specs for assembly, so a manual is most necessary to have! Good luck, and be safe working!
