Unhappy '85 Toyota Pickup Speed Problems

Hello Everyone,

I have an '85 Toyota Pickup M/T non-EFI and I recently had the catalytic converter replaced since it failed the smog test. Everything seems to be fine when I am driving under 45 MPH, but the truck will not get past 60 MPH even when I am flooring it.

The truck will reach 60 MPH but then it suddenly loses speed after a couple minutes. I am having a hard time figuring out what the problem is since I tried to have it repaired numerous times. The mechanic thought it was an ignition coil problem and replaced it. But when I picked up the truck today, it still had the same speed problem.

Thanks in advance.

Default Re: '85 Toyota Pickup Speed Problems

That would be typical of a clogged catalytic converter, but you said you replaced it. Are you sure it went in with the inlet going in the right direction? Also, when cats die, the internal pieces start to break up and usually plug the exhaust, which creates tons of backpressure and gives you the massive power loss effect. Some of those pieces (white chunks) may have gone back into your muffler or pipe between there.

Take fof the muffler and shake it- see it your got junk in there.
