Performance Exhaust SystemsDetailed discussions regarding performance headers, single, dual, street and off-hard racing exhaust systems for your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Installed the Thorley headers today...", within the Performance Exhaust Systems forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I can see that point but isn't that based on the cork style/felpro type gaskets? The header gaskets are the thin metal stackable types..and the ports coming off the heads into the headers havent changed..they are the same diameter...
Also I would suggest not using the gaskets that come with headers. Of course there will be exceptions, but in my experience supplied header gaskets are rarely of good quality. In the old days we bought Hooker headers, threw out the paper gaskets they came with, and bought some FelPros instead.

You are correct. You can reuse the metal gaskets over and over again.
Big Al's fixed the 2 mistakes I made but could not get the 2 nuts on the studs..so I am taking a chance that between the metal gaskets and there being 7/8 nuts on the header that I will be ok..I spent time on the phone with the guys from Thorley re-living my experience and hopefully there will be improvements to the instrucitons...the 2 nuts that I could not get on should have been the first two to be put on but I did not know that.
Driving it last night and this morning there is a noticeable improvement..before when needing to accelerate the truck would downshift..not any more! It pulls nicely off the line and does not fall off..and from a 55-60 roll when I accerlarate it pulls hard!
I have a CAI/cat back and with the headers it is louder; only makes sense since the pipes are larger; if you want your truck to be as quiet as stock don't swap the headers/cat back...I love the sound of the big V8 but that may not be for everyone..
I checked under the hood and sure enough the air intake tube popped out from the rubber connector...put in back in and it runs, idles and sounds like it supposed to! On my way to Big Al's to have them fix the uh oh's I did...and to see if they can get those 2 nuts on...
I'm a genius aren't I I've been working custom Turbo Cressidas and Supras for years, and when a vacuum is leaking, it'll do what you explained. Even if the ECU senses and exhaust leak from the manifolds, it wouldn't add enough fuel to stall it at idle. Glad you got your tiny problem fixed tho.

I was so sick of the truck and getting up and down that I was not thinking straight..thanks for the help..wish I could have gotten the last 2 nuts on and this would be a 100% compete install.
you should be able to loosen all the header nuts (not completely off, just so they are barely holding), slide the headers back of the head and get those nuts on. thats what i usually do for turbo manifolds.
Do you have any sound clips? I would love to hear how it sounds.

Installed Thorley ceramics on my 01 Tundra. Cost were 475 and they took about 5 hours. The drivers side seem to touch my oil dipstick tube. Anyone have the same problem or possible fix.
Headers sound great. My JBAs were leaking so made a change.
Thanks.
