This is a discussion thread titled "Exhaust Drone 1500 rpm", within the Performance Exhaust Systems forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Anybody else notice (seems to be worse when its cold out - below zero) - kind of a pain as it occurs @ 55 and gets worse as you give it more throttle - wondering if this is common or if mine came with a special option
I have this too. When driving in 6th gear and going up an incline, at around 1200 rpm, I get a drone type sound. It goes up and down with the throttle. I'm going to crawl under the truck tomorrow and see if there are any holes in the exhaust. I have the stock exhaust system.
Not me. I just have the regular stock exhaust. The drone only happens when the engine is under load. If I shift into Neutral and rev then engine to 1200 to 1500 rpm, it doesn't drone.

Mine makes its noise around 1500 rpm, which happens to be the rpm at 100km/hour or highway speed. It is very loud. I think it must be something other than exhaust. I hear it coming from up front in engine compartment. Does this sound like the same thing as you guys.
When I had my stock exhaust on the truck I noticed it around 60mph or so. Didn't think to check rpms but would guess it to be around 1500. I notice it a lot more now with my new exhaust but isn't as bad as I first thought it would be. I don't think it matters what exhaust you have on this truck you are going to have that drone, imho

I guess it's just a combination of the right gearing, or luck that these engines like to cruise right in the drone zone.. If I put my sequential shift into 5th it changes the RPM's just a bit higher so there's no drone but who wants to kill MPG doing that.. Sucks!
So, is it safe to assume that we all have this exhaust drone? If so, I won't worry too much about it if its normal. My drone can be felt in the steering and floor too. This truck seems to be very "buzzy" for lack of a better word. My cabin noise was even worse before I had my defective front diff replaced. That just compounded the problem. I've read so many reviews of the Tundra that mention how quiet the cab is though which confuses me.
I have an 07 DC TRD 5.7, with the stock exhaust and intake. I don't have the drone that you decsribe. Mine is quiet at when cruising at any RPM. With the windows all up, this is one of the most quiet vehicles that I have ever owned. Actually, I am considering going to one of the aftermarket Cat Back systems to be able to hear the sound that this great engine makes a little better. Just don't want the drone while cruising that some say they have. Would just like to hear it a little better when I feel the need for speed. Maybe some of these trucks came through with an improperly tightened clamp somewhere in the exhaust system?

I think it is break in. My Tundra, although a 2003 model was a little louder for the first few thousand miles and then eventually quieted down.
Actually 1200-1500 rpm under load wastes more gas than if you were to use a lower gear at 2000-2300 rpm. Lugging the motor, out of range of that particular motor's power band, will not only cause that dreaded drone but result in lack of power.
1200-1500 rpm should be operated on a flat surface to maintain a speed or when going down a grade to slowly pick up speed. Under load going uphill, 1200-1500 rpm is just pointless because of the lack of acceleration (primarily because even the 5.7 V8 doesn't operate optimally in that range.
1800 rpm - 2500 rpm provides enough torque without having to rev the motor any higher.
Mine does it also. It has something to do with outside temps and the stainless exhaust. Stainless expands with warmer temps. That why it is pretty much gone when the temps warm up. I have even noticed it leaves when it is cold, once the truck gets good and warm.
