Performance Exhaust SystemsDetailed discussions regarding performance headers, single, dual, street and off-hard racing exhaust systems for your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Doug Thorley or JBA HEADERS", within the Performance Exhaust Systems forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Just wanted to give everone a heads up. I have owned 3 Tundras a Blue 2000 SR5 4X4, 2004 Double Cab SR5 4x4 and the newest addition a 2000 TRD 4x4. When I 1st bought the 2000 I had cracked manifolds replace both with JBA'S. I was happy with the headers, shop said they were relatively easy to install. They did have to re-grind where the header contacts the head to make it totally flat. Other then that it was great, I did notice a slight difference in power and no more dreaded, tick, tick.
The 2004 I only had a short time no header problems hear. But my 2000 had much more power even with out the headers.
Last but not least I just bought the latest 2000 TRD. Low and behold both manifolds were cracked. I put a set of Doug Thorley headers on. The shop said they were leaps and bounds above the JBA as far as quality and welds were concerened. These did take about an extra hour to install as this is more of a true header then the JBA. Much longer. I picked it up and there was a noticable difference in power over the JBA's. The Thorley's are more of a true header. I paid $700.00 for the coated JBA's and I paid $475. for the Doug Thorleys. If any one was debaiting the Thorleys blew the JBA's away. Just my 2 cents. I got them through Tundra Racing, very nice guy shipped them out same day. Just wanted to pass this info on. If any one has any questions let me know. Next I am off the get the torn Steering Shaft Boot Replaced. Thanks, Bryce
I understand, I drive 1,000 miles per week. There is a slight difference when you punch the gas, but when cruising any where from 70 to 85 I can not honestly hear a difference. Hope this helps.
What do you guys think, should I complete the process and do the UNICHIP. Trust me I have done the search feature and all, I just wanted to see what people think. Are there any long term problems with the UNICHIP, is it harder on the engine?? Thanks in advance and have a great night.
The JBA's were shorty's?
The others were long tubes?
If so there is no comparison because shorty's are mostly for show and bragging rights (I have headers aint I cool)
Long tubes will make more power on almost any application.

how's the interior/exterior sound comparison between the two/stock? i commute approximately 45 miles to work each day so drone is a big issue for me.
The difference in any exhaust mod and leaving the truck stock could be audible noise while cruising vs the near total silence of stock.
There are good points to both but if you don't like noise leave it stock.
Headers generally help more at higher rpm so a lot of people would not notice the difference with their regular driving habits.
However a set of headers with the stock exhaust system would probably have no audible difference over a stock vehicle.
This setup should also minimise any HP gains the headers could provide.

I hear no noise difference at highway speeds. I have 2 set of headers and I hear them when you punch it or get above 3 thousand rpms. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the info. I've been debating whether to get the Doug Thorley or JBA for my 06 dc. I've been leaning towards the DT and your postings reaffirmed my choice. I have the TRD dual exhaust and I like it. I've been searching for someone who has an 05 or 06 Tundra with Doug Thorley headers for feedback, but to no avail. The closest I got to hearing the DT with TRD exhaust is on an FJ Cruiser at YouTube.

Re: Noise.... I have 2001 Tundra LTD 4x4 TRD Edition, w/TRD dual exhaust. At 26K, the dreaded tick-tick-tick started, until the engine warmed up; right exhaust manifold was cracked - Toyota conveniently couldn't find it while under warranty; as soon the warranty time option had expired, it magically appeared.
I had the TRD exhaust installed after I bought the truck and immediately noticed an increase in drone from the exhaust system. I recently had the manifolds replaced with Thorley ceramic-coated header, and definitely recommend them - the droning is all but gone. Still get a nice rumble from the exhaust, but the interior noise is definitely 95% better.
Does seem to have a little less torque in the low end, but I've only drive 100 miles, so the ECU probably hasn't finished doing its' 'thing', and it does seem to be getting better every day.
Like the headers, and the reduced noise. It even seems to have helped my fuel mileage.
For folks that live in Cali we have to get headers that are smog certified. Are the Thorleys certified like the JBAs?
I'm contemplating this mod as well but having owned a muscle car and trading it in for the Tundra it's nice not having to go through the headaches of getting smog issue.

I just read the tundra racing description of them, and it says it does not compromise the emissions system. I don't know if they are CARB legal however.
