Question Ceramic coating - Worth it??

I just got a set of JBA headers for my 04, just the plain stainless. But now I am thinking that I should have gotten the ceramic coated ones. I've got a guy here in town that will coat the ones I've got inside and out for just about the addtional price of the JBA coated ones. But is it worth it? I understand that it lowers underhood temperatures and makes them look better, but for an extra $200+? Thanks for any input.....

IMO no, simply because the durability of the coating is only a notch better than a good sandblast and spray bomb. You can buy a lot of rattle cans for $200.

Wow, amazing responses. A GOOD ceramic coating will be MUCH better than a sandblast and rattle can but you get what you pay for. $200 seems high but see what kind of a warranty they have on the ceramic.

Also, when you coat the headers inside and out with ceramic, it does lower the underhood temps.

I have owned 7 sets of JBA LT's and I couldn't disagree more. Their overpriced and highly overrated.

JBA makes the best headers on the market for late model applications IMO.
The performance is the same whether coated or not, simply giving the headers a very good scrubbing in Dawn* dish soap and using High Temp rattle cans to handle the cosmetics the savings are there.
I have parts coated locally and save plenty by doing it.

Personally I'm Old School when it comes to performance aesthetics, the old saying "Chrome Dont Get Ya Home" is a solid standard to adhere to.
It cost less then $30 for material and labor to coat a set of LT Headers, even less on a mass scale.
Thats a $170.00 tip for the Advertising Dept

Testosterone Management if you will

Yeep, had lots of headers and big dollars added up over the years into coatings....they get maybe a year more than a rattle can before they rust.

JBA obviously uses crappy coating, if you have ever run Doug Thorley headers with ceramic you would notice a difference...

Again, you need to find a new brand of header or a new ceramic company because the ones you have are junk. If a header company is worth their salt, they will guarantee the ceramic coating for LIFE, period. If you don't get this, it is junk.

And you say 'lots', how many is that. I have personally had 5 sets of ceramic headers on personal vehicles. These are not show rigs, they are and were daily drivers and I have NEVER had a set rust. We have been selling headers for a long time, about 6 years (Doug Thorley's mostly, some Edelbrocks...) and we have NEVER had to warranty a set of headers due to ceramic failure and that is over 300 sets of headers, sounds like you need to stop buying junk.

Smile Re: Ceramic coating - Worth it??

Ok, I've "exhausted" most of the resources availible regarding coated headers and here is what I've come up with. This information concerns professionally applied ceramic that is of good quality.

-No rattle paint will even touch the quality of ceramic. They aren't even in the same league.

-Ceramic coatings do lower underhood temperatures, and also accelerates the pulsed-vacuum effect on “tuned” headers, resulting in more effective scavenging of cylinders. The increased velocity of exhaust gases produced by higher exit inertia not only clears each cylinder more quickly; it also draws in the next fuel/air charge more efficiently.

-A good coating will last as long as the product its applied on.

-They look better!

Bottom line is they might not be worth the extra cheese for the average person. But for someone who is not concerned about money, ceramic coatings are yet another way to get the best performance from your headers.

Respectfully disagree. This has not been my experience at all. That being said, it is entirely possible things have improved, and I would indeed spend the money if I could expect good results as stated.

Some third party salt spray tests would be very convincing.
