OK I came from an 04 Dakota 4.7. I know Dodges are the loudest stock so they naturally respond more decibel-wise to aftermarket exhausts. I had a 16 inch SI/DO magnaflow at one point. It was perfect. Not obnoxious at all. I could DEFINITELY hear it inside the cabin and from outside the truck on heavy throttle but it didn't set off car alarms or anything. The annoying thing was though it went right up to the line between civilized and overbearing without crossing over there was a horrible in-cabin drone in certain situations that spoiled it for me.
I got rear ended at speed, the whole system got crushed, so I had them bolt on a dynomax Superturbo SI/DO next, it was a 13 inch. I know what's tolerable and what isn't is subjective but it was the perfect balance for me, right on the line between civil and obnoxious as opposed to the magnaflow that stopped right before straddling the line. Zero drone, could hear me 2-3 blocks away, deep rumble at idle, and a race-car type roar on heavy throttle. It could even set off a car alarm or two from time to time but my neighbors never complained when I came home late.
Now Im pondering mufflers for my 09 5.7 crewmax. It's such a quieter engine than my 4.7 was and all I seem to hear on these forums about experiences with aftermarket systems is stuff like 'not much louder than stock but just the right rumble.' I want more than that and it seems like it will be more of a challenge to get the same sound quality from this engine that I had on my Dodge. I need a deep but not too obtrusive rumble at idle and I want a muscle car roar I can hear on heavy throttle. But not quite so much as to hurt peoples' ears and be a nuissance. I heard a flowmaster SI/DO coupled with a TRD intake on someone else's Tundra. It was not deep enough for me. I complicated the guy on the looks of his system and he was proud of it but then his truck kinda sounded like a washer machine out of balance pulling away. There was extra loudness but it just didn't have the deep rumple quality I like, too coarse and tinny.
So cliff notes, Ive decided want a loud (but not obnoxiously loud) truck with a smooth burble on idle and a good solid cammy roar on accelaration but am not sure what will give me that.
Current candidates include a magnaflow or a dynomax superturbo. I'd consider borla but haven't talked to anybody about them or heard sound clips yet. Banks generally seems to me like overkill for anything except diesels. The TRD system is out, as Ive heard sound clips and am not interested in paying 1000 bucks or more for something that won't sound much louder than stock.
do the 09's have resonators? If so find out if the guy that had the out of balance washing machine had that removed or not...i found with my 04 that any exhaust system that i threw on it was crap until i had that removed.

First things first, you must remove the resonator. I have a flowmaster that sounds great on my tundra. For some extra roar, take the resonator off and put one of those listed above with some thick pipe, and extra bends will help in the pipe will help

Which ones of these do we need for the Tundra? I have a Flowmaster Super 40, dual in, dual out...No resonators either..Still not loud enough except for when you get on it. I want loud while at idle. Suggestions?

without massive over lap and lift on your cams, you won't get a real loud idle. Unless, you just run open headers. I've already tried this, (to get loud idle, not running open headers) You can disconnect the exhaust before and after the y-pipe, they're still pretty quiet at idle. No muffler or exhaust system is gonna add much sound at idle. Now under part to full throttle, that's another story. Just delete your resonator (if the 5.7 has one) and muffler. If that's too loud weld in a magnaflow or borla, but leave the stock tubing in place, make sure the muff you choose is the same diameter inlet and outlet as the rest of your exhaust system or you'll create turbulence and back pressure which would actually hurt your driveability.

i have the same super 40 dual in dual out and when i took off my cats it got loud at idle and even more under wot- i cant here the noise from the s/c anymore.
