So has anyone replaced just the muffler and kept the stock piping? I'm super low on cash and would like a bit more rumble outta the truck. Any direct replacement muffler sound clips? Looking for rumble with very low drone at highway in a double cab 5.7.
Does it matter that I have a flex-fuel?

This was a very popular mod amongst the Gen 1 guys too, so yes it can be done. I would say that most go with complete cat back systems but I can certainly understand watching the pennies these days. On that note you might consider searching for a thread called "$180 cat back" where a guy actually modified his stock muffler for better flow and dual tailpipes.

Jump on youtube and look for soundclips with your motor. I have an 09 Crewmax 5.7 4x4. So far of all I've listened to I've heard only a handful that give me the exhaust note I like. Those powersticks, one or two Magnaflows, and some setups where people messed with resonators and such. I don't even need it really loud like my old Dynomax Superturbo 13 inch was but the exact exhaust note I was looking for just isn't there. But then again I come from a Dodge where it wasn't hard at all to get loud and deep. This 5.7 is a different beast from any of the big 3 or the 4.7 soundwise. Oh yeah and I have yet to hear a Flowmaster setup that I like on it.

Some very mild drone at exactly 2000 rpm at load, but that's probably because I had them install it tucked up and out of the way, so it isn't in the optimal position. Aero recommends that the muffler be installed with a foot of straight pipe on either side, mine doesn't have any. Planning on cutting off the side exit and dumping it just over the axle.

Let me add my 2 cents .. ! I have a Tundra 5.7L and I went to ebay for my cat-back MAGNAFLOW like 600$ ... i got it installed in a shop, when i turned the truck ON ... it was to loud, Crazy ...like a bass on the inside, for the people on the shop that was awsone ...! but for me was terrible, i couldn't take it ........... (i sold it ) go back to internet .. talk with the guys at the shop .. and they explaind to me about what to get .. .... so i went with Flowmaster 50 suv
(2.25 x 2 inlet 3 outlet) !! just the muffler that i found on ebay for 60$$ (auction)... paid 70$ to swap the muffler and that was just perfect... no any high droning and when u hit the gas u can feel the power ! ...
I will post a video and some pics tomorrow so u can make a choice ... ..
i will say .. go for it ...u will not spent a lot of$$$$ just decided how loud u want to go ..
Swapped mine out with the 18" dual in/single out Magnaflow and put a turn down before the rear axle. I like it, I would describe the sound as a low smooth tone. It is a little louder from when it was first installed. I can hear the muffler when cruising on the highway, but I wouldn't consider it drone.

I am running the Aero Turbine with a set of "foolies" and love it. I made the mistake of cutting out the OEM resonator and had ridiculous drone which was solved by installing a glass pack.
I love the sound and despite what other members have said regarding it sounding like a rotted out exhaust it does not sound like that at all. The foolies made the exhaust note a little mellower and the glass pack helped immensely with the drone. I would get a sound clip but have no access to any video or sound recording equipment.
On the subject of exhaust set-ups I would be interested in how a set of glass packs, one at the resonator location and two off the ends of each split over the axle, with down turn tips tips would sound. The final modification to my exhaust (excluding the exhaust device I have had under development for the past four years) will be a set of headers. Alas, my divorce has strangely left me a pauper so that will have to wait. Someday, someday.

Try youtube and type in "Powerstick Tundra" . I put a set on mine and it sounds bada*s !! I cut the stock pipe right at the muffler and welded the powersticks on . Out of the powersticks i dumped it .
