Can someone tell me how to cure exhaust drone or direct me to a thread that covers this. I have an 06 with a 4.7 and Magnaflow. I get the drone between 1750 and 2250 rpm.

You can do what I did go to this website and add or cut your exhaust to move the drone. I ended up cutting about 21" off my banks exhaust. It now dumps just over the rear axle.

Do you still have the stock resonator? I cured my drone by installing glass pack where my stock resonator was. After I added foolies the drone disappeared even more and the tone mellowed as well.

Are you getting drone at starting out rpm's or cruising rpms. Problems with the new Tundras is at 70 your doing only 1800 rpms and that is with the 4.30 gears, a little less with 4.10's. That is a terrible rpm as the engine is basically lugging. The 04 Tundra I had would be doing 2200rpms at 70 and it seems that you need to get past that 2000 rpm threshold while cruising to not get drone. I might very well be going through the same problem once I get my Spintech on, but its a less mellow muffler so hopefully it will be fine.

AIP Solution: Disconnect both air pumps. You will get a CEL ( Codes P0418,P0419)but no limp mode and no affect on performance. AIP system will be shut down preventing valves from opening. There are two pump connectors, one behind the coolant reservoir on the front of the engine and one below the air box along the wheel well. Both are large gray connectors. Disconnect them, tape them up, zip tie them to keep them from getting into anything hot or moving and your done. If you need service done, reconnect them before you take the truck to the dealer. Enjoy.
Thanks for the input. That calculator link is interesting. It seems that eliminating the behind the tire exit to an infront of the tire exit would eliminate almost all possible drone. Also I read somthing on here somewhere about a hemolitz resonator ( dont recall the spelling) Anyone else heard of this or tried it? By the way it does have the stock resonator on it.
Hey sports I bought an resonator from chamber exhaust and decided not to put it in and just cut the pipe. Cutting gives the truck a clean look no tail pipe sticking out. Where in FL are you? I'm in Orlando.

The legedary MrCreosote can tell you about the hemoltz.....herloltz..............hard to freakin spell resonator. It's a t-pipe you add to your tail pipe near spare tire. It basically absorbs the pulses and smooths the tone.
I noticed CAI adds to drone, not sure if you have one. I got slight drone after adding JBA headers, and surprisingly cutting out my resonator got rid of it completely. Go figure.

this is crazy! I've never had drone on an 03-06. In 03 Toyota eliminated the 3rd cat going with 2 large cats and a resonator. These systems have no drone if you go out just before the rear tire. That's how I originally did mine. It had no drone even after my Pep Boys muffler fell apart and was an empty can.
In 05, I believe, Toyota kept the resonator and changed the cats to these huge monster cats with the 02 sensors in the cats. You can actually use a muffler with no packing and it's still not too loud, even dumped!
I'm not sure what Magnaflow model you have? If it's chambered that's likely the cause of the drone. You're having to push the throttle down harder than you should in order to push out the exhaust. If it's not chambered I would try exiting before the rear tire. If that doesn't cure it build a helmholtz resonator. According to creosote it's just a 26" piece of tubing that welds into the system, he put his after the axle, but I think you could put it just about anywhere. Just 't' off the exhaust system then cap the end. You should definitly do a search of all his posts and even PM him. Please post up what you find as I will have to combat this soon.
I built a dual system on a 5.7L a couple months ago. He has a Volant which is where a lot of his sound comes from, but I would imagine there is resonance from the exhaust as well. I don't know what it is about Toyota V8's but they have this high pitch exhaust. I think it is a combination of cam profile, firing order, and head design. But it's very hard to tune out the high pitch.
I also have a great exhaust write up at BAMufflers.com

Is anyone familiar with this truck? I would like to get some info and more pictures of it. I would really like to get an underside picture of the exhaust if anyone has one. I think I found this picture on Socaltundras forum but can not remember and cant seem to find any more pictures or even this one. If I go to an in front of the rear tire exhaust exit I would like it to look like this one.
Thanks
Mr Creosote's reply for a single exhaust pipe:
"In that case you only have one Helmholtz tube to add anyway. I would use around 24-26" of 2.5" tubing about half way down the tailpipe, i.e. half way between the rear of the muffler and the outlet tip. This will probably end up being between the rear end and spare tire. You will cut a hole in the stock tailpipe and weld (or clamp) in the 26" long section in a "T" junction over the hole. Don't stick the tube into the stock tailpipe at all, as you don't want to block or restrict the exhaust flow. Make the "T" so the helmholtz tube fits flush on the outer surface of the stock tailpipe, right over where you cut the hole. Also as you know, the helmholtz tube must be capped off on the other end. Have a look in my gallery for some photos."
For dual exhaust: He advises to check the pipes and see if one vibrates. the vibrating one would get the tube.
Anyone else have expirence with this?
Way back when, I installed a Gibson cat-back on my 2000 with a 4.7. The sound was acceptable but I experienced exhaust drone at about 2000 rpm. I subsequently installed a set of JBA shorties and the drone was completely eliminated. Just a thought...
I only had drone issues with a flowmaster muffler, I had enough drone for everybody. This was even worse whit a CAI. Since then, my newer set up doesn't get real drone, but I did notice a CAI added slight drone. Flowmaster is like a bad joke for these trucks, sorry to any fans of them. It sounded rude on the street, but I know it was killing exhaust velocity. Your mufflers make the most sense to me, no chambers of dead space. I agree the pitch of these motors is different, they sound nothing like other trucks but its a sound I love.
One interesting thing I notice recently was my exhaust had a tone to it, not droning but a humming that stayed around at low RPM. I cut out the resonator and it left, now it sounds much cleaner. I think the OEM resonator keeps the exhaust note within certain frequecies. For the OP, the helmholtz resonator seems a safe bet.

I have long tube headers, no cats, and very loud dual mufflers. Zero drone. Headers really do kill drone![]()
soooooo, I am living proof that Helmholz resonators workI did a pair on a 5.7L just yesterday, it worked extremely well! It cut 95+% of the drone! Thanks creosote.
