Performance Exhaust SystemsDetailed discussions regarding performance headers, single, dual, street and off-hard racing exhaust systems for your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Dual Exhaust Disappointment", within the Performance Exhaust Systems forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
So there I was....at a truck specialty shop talking with a fabricator who makes custom dual exhaust systems....with my brand new Tundra sitting outside. My goal? To get an estimate for creating a set of duals using a Flowmaster Delta 50 series muffler. Much to my surprise, he offered the following:
Seems he has fabricated many dual exhaust systems for the Tundra in recent years. He reports that almost every single one he has done has come back to the shop within a month or two. The reason? Unbearable resonance in the cab at about 2000 rpm. He reported that it didn't seem to make a difference what brand or series the muffler was....including Flowmaster 40 and 50 series, Gibson, Magnaflow....whatever. The only explanation he could offer was that perhaps the Tundra V8, being a DOHC engine, produced exhaust characteristics that promoted cab resonance.
I'm truly disappointed. Really looking for some HONEST feedback regarding what your experience has been...including which muffler/s you used in your dual setup.

I personally don't like dual exhaust. But I did have some single exhaust that droned really bad. They lasted about 2 months on the truck. I now have a single Magnaflow with stock pipes and the noise is gone. Good luck!!

I have a Borla cat back dual exhaust. It sounds great and I get no drone at all. Perfect at every speed. But, the exhaust combined with the Volex intake really sucked the power from my truck.. I guess it could be the 285's I have on it also. Lost a bunch of torque and it shifts down on slight grades. Wish it was stock again.
I have Borla Pro XS and I love it a 2K RPMs it drones like crazy but I LOVE IT

I bought this 4runner for $200. Currently its not running but I hope it will soon. I got some sweet plans for it. Post pics as I go.
I have a 2004 Double Cab Tundra and I installed a Borla Dual exhaust system. I have the F.I.P.K K&N system too. The truck sounds awesome. I noticed that when I am going up a hill about 20-35 miles an hour (pretty steep hill) the exhaust does resonate, especially when I have the windows down and the rear window down (you cannot hear the person beside you talk). I really only notice this when I am going slowly up hill or the engie is labored with lower RPM's. I had the resonator cut out of thh exhaust and it probably made it a bit worse, but the sound is a bit more throaty.
I truly appreciate the responses guys...but no one has truly addressed my original question, which is:
Does anyone have a DUAL exhaust system installed on their Tundra (I'm not interested in a single exhaust outlet) which produces no or little drone as described by the fabricator I talked to? If so....what kit/muffler did you use? Did you leave the resonator on, or remove it?

I have the borla Dual's and Im taking them off I cant stand the Noise and this wasnt what I was expecting to take place. It also seemed to kill low end power too But im not sure how much power was lossed during this transition .
The 2K sounds is flat out too loud and I hate driving the Tundra on the freeways because of this Noise It's back to stock very soon..

The TRD duals will likely be the quietest you can get, since they are supplied and approved by Toyota. They do have a slight drone, however. It all depends on your threshold of tolerance. You might try a test drive on a TRD equipped Tundra, which have the same system factory installed. Alternately how about leaving the stock exhaust in place, complete with single muffler, and then fabricating a "Y" after the muffler into dual tailpipes.
My truck has the TRD dual (not a true Dual by the way) and it has a nice mellow tone. I don't notice any droning and i tow quite regulary with it. I don't know if it lost any low end torque as i never had the stock exhaust to compare with.
If i was to get a new truck i wouldn't order it though, it does sound good but i like a quiet truck.
This one was already on the lot and i had to have this truck
All these different exhausts you guys are buying - are they larger than stock pipe size (or equivilent) or are the the same? I think what might be killing your low end power is the larger pipe size, not neccessarily the muffler.
Also, what about the stock dual exhaust (well sort of, it starts as a dual, then collects in a resonator, and then splits again to the exahaust tips) on the Tundra T3 edition?

I have a dual exhaust on my 05 DC. I have a Magnaflow muffler and there is little to no drone. At idle, it is just a little louder than stock. The guy who installed the system cut the "Y" at the engine and made it a "true" dual system.
the person who said they had to remove the back half of their exhaust when they installed the SOS drop kit....i have the borla dual rear exit system, i'm looking at geting a 2"/4" drop kit from SOS, do you know if i would have to remove the borla system to do it?
