My parents used to get a tree with the roots and plant it after Christmas.
I have a fake tree so I'm not using a real tree for three weeks and then simply throwing it in the trash. I'm not an environmentalist, but it just seems like a waste IMO.
I've begged my wife for a fake (albeit one of the really good looking ones) tree for years simply because of my allergies to everything green. However, "it's not Christmas with a fake tree" is the response I get, so we always get a real one. We have 8' ceilings, but we always get a 9' tree and I do some lumberjacking. Why??? "Because bigger trees look better". I used to prefer Douglas Firs because they aggravated my allergies less, but the wife likes Frasier Firs, so we've had them since we moved in together. I just dope myself up if I get too bothered. It's only a few weeks a year, and it makes the wife and the boy happy. At the end of the season, all homeowners with real trees are asked to put their trees out on certain days depending on the neighborhood, and the trees are collected and used in wetlands restoration. I'm all for that since coastal erosion has directly impacted my life, and the lives of everyone from New Orleans and the surrounding areas.
So in response to the poll:
Real
9' cut back to about 7.5'
clear mini lights
glass ornaments on the top half, and plastic child and puppy proof on the bottom
Cheers!
