I've got my own ideas about links between human activity, CO2, global warming / climate change, and I know lots of other people have their own ideas. There are some scientists -- unfortunately mostly oil industry funded and not published in peer reviewed journals -- who think it is all hype, and part of a natural cycle, and we don't need to change anything about how we're living and affecting our natural environment.
Without this becoming a flaming war (if it does, I'll just stop reading) I'm curious what this forum regulars -- or irregulars for that matter -- think about it all.

Re: Carbon Dioxide: Real Threat, or Tree-Hugger Hype?
Well me being a young gun and all the crap I take in college that global warming is caused by man at an alarming rate in the US and if we do not do something about it now then we are going to kill our planet. That is such crap. Al Gore invented Global Warming and he doesn't even have a degree in climatology. But wait we'll give him a Nobel Peace Prize.
Global warming in my own opinion is caused by sunspots that can make the earth's temperature increase or degrease naturally. Global warming and Global cooling have occurred 1000's of years before man arrived.
Do I think that we need to worry about the polar ice caps melting at the North Pole? NO. If it melts there, then that means that more ice is forming down at Antarctica. So what we lose a few polar bears big deal.
The rise in CO2 means more plant food = more photosynthesis.
OK about pollutants do you think we need to do something about polluting the atmosphere in the United States? No in my opinion. But look at China for example who couldn't give a rats A$$ about polluting and who dump and have no regulations whatsoever. People accuse the US as being the biggest polluters. Well I find that hard to believe. Take a good look a China.
What ticks me off is seeing this global warming crap and the rise of Green house gases in textbooks, major test such as ACT, SAT, Science Praxis (education majors take). I mean come on.
I think if you are going to teach global warming in the classroom, please explain both sides of the story instead of the narrow minded where we are all going to die scenario.
One of my college professors told the class that she bought Carbon offset points that last time she flew. I mean come on, you just through your money away. Also she in class calculated our CARBON Footprint and compared it to a couple of 3rd world countries. That Carbon footprint crap is what Al Gore made up too.
I'm sure you guys see a big push for the swirl light bulbs and florescent tubes in home. being more energy efficient and money savers. I bet you guys didn't know that those florescent bulbs contain mercury in them.
Do I use swirl bulbs myself? Yes. Why, because they last longer than a typical incandescent bulb. They are coming down in price by the way but they are still expensive.
Here are a couple examples of my last environmental science midterm.
Describe 2 ways you can reduce your footprint?
1. drive a hybrid Toyota prius.
2. reduce thermostat temperature from 70F to 65F during the winter time
Both of these were my responses.
Affluenza increases man's ecological footprint and compromises environmental quality all over the world. True according to my professor.
About % of the solar energy that falls on plants is captured for photosynthesis
A 100% B 60%-70% C 40%-50% D 10%-20% E less than 1%
E. is the correct answer according to my professor. I find this one hard to believe. I figured 60%-70%
Extra credit question worth 4 points total
So what really is the cause of Global warming? What can be done about it.
Global warming is caused by an increase in the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. This is caused by human activity. Find alternative resources other than coal or oil.
But on the other hand can Global Warming be caused by sunspots? If it is caused by sunspots, then isn't that a natural occurring event not cause by humans? Then if that belief is true then there is no need to worry about it then.
Here is my professors response. Science has shown it is not caused by sunspots. It may partially affect temperature but no to the degree we are experimenting.
Is that not biased at its best? I only got 2 points out of a possible 4 points.
Re: Carbon Dioxide: Real Threat, or Tree-Hugger Hype?
When you boil it down it is reduced to this: Celebrities need a cause. Whether it is global warming/cooling, climate change or what ever they call it now. Famous people get bored and need to feel important and increase their celebrity. Liberals pressure professors and scientists to accept their TRUTH or be shunned and punished at work and in the media, I've seen it.
What ever happend to the ozone layer? Is it still there or did global warming burn it away.
Take for instance the ozone layer hype back in the 80's. There's a hole in it at the north and south poles and we are all going to die. Well, duh. Ozone only exists for about 30-45 minutes before decaying back to O2. It is produced by solar high energy particles hitting O2 atoms in the upper atmosphere and forming O3. Very little sun light hits the south and north poles and the earth's magnetic field deflects alot of the energy anyway. So, there is very little ozone produced there...IT WAYS ALWAYS LIKE THAT.
These eco-fanatics, or as I like to call them...Human Haters, believe they can SAVE THE WORLD. Save the world from whom, well...us. The ignorant Toyota tundra 5.7L V8 full open down the strip co2 belching boobs. What they don't tell you is that humans produced less than 1/10th of 1% of all co2 emissions and trees probably suck that up anyway.
I wonder how much co2 a volcanic eruption produces?

Normally, I would agree with you, but these retarded (I apologize to all the retards out there) liberals what to tax the crap out of us and raise electricity rates to SAVE THE WORLD.Now, prezbo is talking about launching pollution particles into the atmoshere and building artifical volcanos to combat GLOBAL CLIMATE WARMING CHANGE...OMG!!!These people are crazy! Can we really handle another war? A war on the SUN no less.
