Default BFG or Toyo .. the big debate...

.. ok I've read quite a few threads around different tires for the Tacoma. I've got the "factory" BFG Rugged Trail A/T on now but I've just hit 40,000 and had to get one of my tires patched due to a screw that was forced in. Made me take a closer look at my tires especially when I dropped the spare and realzed how much tread was gone in 40,000 miles from the origional.

So I head over to a newly opened Les Schwab in my area since they offered free patching. They hooked me up pretty quickly and of course they're going to try and sell me new tires while I'm waiting with the tread wear I have. So the guy shows me a set of Toyo Wildcat A/T since I said I was looking for something with similar ratings as the BFG's. Tire looked good but I know nothing about Toyo in terms of quality and stuff. I've always used Sears for my passenger car tires and usually always BFG's.

I've seen the opinions here on the Open Country Toyo's but I'm not really looking for a mud tire. I pull a heavy trailer so I need a tire that's rated for at least as much load as the current BFG's and I do run up the mountain for some snow play several times a year (I carry cables as well).

So I'm sure I'm going to get a ton of opinions but that's what I'm looking for.

Do I:
1. Replace like for like and stick with BFG Rugged Trail A/T
2. Replace the BFG's for Toyo's
3. Look at other options for an all season M&S rated tire.

BTW I drive 100 miles a day to work which is where 95% of my miles come from. Rarely offroad other than the easy rated fire roads and the rutted trails to a camp site.

im gonna throw my .02 in there and say go with none of the above. if you're gonna stick with the bfg's fine. but if you are wanting something with an incredibly awesome ride, great on and off road, and a decent mileage tire...go with the bridgestone dueler a/t revos! do a search on them...you'll see how good of a review that they get. their reviews are way better than the bfg rugged trails, and in my opinion, they'll last longer for ya!

I like my BFG at revos, but if your going to stick with BFG I'd go with there regular ATs not the rugged trails. Don't know much about the Toyos but I know there street tires are good.

I just replaced my stock tires with the bridgestone revo's. Look good and ride well. Most of my driving has been on road but the reviews for off road are incredible. I will be some off roading soon with the tire so will be updating posts afterward. Check out tirerack.com for extensive reviews on both sets. I dont believe they have the toyo at's listed though. I would go for the revo's for price, capability, mileage and weight over the BFG AT KO.

I would opt for either the Bridgestone Revo's or Pirelli Scorpions.

BFG AT KO's. Over 55,000 miles on them (mainly highway) and they still have a little while to go.

Cool.. thanks for the reply's so far. I always got the impression from reading here that the Revo's were very good for offroad tires so I didn't really consider them. I'll definitely have to take a second look at them though. I did find that some of the tires I looked at didn't have the same load range as the BFG AT's currently on my truck. Since I pull a heavy trailer I needed at least the same stock load range rating. I'll see what the Revo's offer.

Keep the opinions coming.
Thanks

I don't know about the REVOS, many on this board seem to like them. Had Bridgestone Desert Duelers on my 2000 taco and they really stunk in the snow, had a $1,200 tree vs. Left Truck side bill to prove it. Sold that Taco with KO's on it, put KO's on my new Taco and never looked back. Ride nice on the highway, good tread life and traction to boot. P.S. Factory Tires Suck!

I have about 3000 miles on the Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor AT tires. The best tires I have ever owned. Very quiet on the dry road and they are the best tire I have had in the snow (they have the snowflake on the mountain symbol which means they are legal to use on mountain passes when they require chains). Here are a few links...

The Secret Ingredient revealed - Kevlar - Off-Road.com - In this test they went head to head against the BF Goodrich All terrain KO and the Goodyears won.

Consumer Survey Results By Category - Here is the Tirerack.com survey for AT tires.

Good Luck...

The rugged trail are not comparable to their "all-terrain" KO's, AT ko's are D load rated "8ply" and will ride firmer and tow much better and super long wearing. The Revo's are very comparable to the AT ko's, check the load ratings by size though, also long wearing. All of the Toyos AT's ive seen develop poor wear patterns and become excessively noisy over time.
Bridgestones just a touch quieter than the KO's. Cant go wrong with either IMO.

first of all, I believe that the wildcat a/t are not toyo brand but Les Schwab brand. however, i may be mistaken. that being said, i personally have no experience with Les Schwab brand tires but i can talk about toyo. I have a set of toyo open country a/t tires on my 07 DC TRD OR and I love them. they are hands down the best multi-use tires i have ever owned. I also tow a trailer and these tires carry an 8-ply rating. the handling on these LT rated tires is muuuch better than the P rated stockers (bfg rugged trails). I too drive like you, primarily street, some off-road and snow when it comes. these tires take it all and more plus they come with a 50,000 mile warranty. (btw, I bought them at my local Les Schwab). they are a great tire, they wear long, grip strong, and can handle anything the road, construction sites, my trailer or I can throw their way. from me, definitely recommended.

Just an update. I decided to go with the Toyo Open Country A/T and I've been driving on them for a week now. Definitely like the ride. As others have said they ride very well on pavement and are quiet. They almost seem smoother than the BFG's that were on it from the factory. I got a killer deal as my local Les Schwab as they're newly opened. Cost me less per tire than the BFG's would have.

Thanks for all the input comments. Can't wait to try these in the snow now... of course it has to snow first... grrr.
