View Poll Results: Does Your 2007 have "piston slapping" or "knocking" upon startup?
Mine is noisy that's for sure. When I start it I let it warm up for about three minutes in my garage and when I first take off when it's under a load it sounds like a diesel or an engine with very little oil in it so I take it really easy for about 1-2 miles and then it quiets down as it fully comes up to temp but when I'm in a drive through its loud or in park idling and open my door I can hear it clanging away just like my GMC that was diagnosed with piston slap and my 05 F150 that had a lower end noise I only have 400 miles on this new truck and it sounds like I have 200,000+ and it was abused and I did not abuse it .I'm off to the dealer on Monday I'm not looking for absolutely no noise I realize it might have a little but this is not good I did not have it when I test drove it for 12 miles and I listened as I was worried because of my last two trucks. I'm curious also as to how many owners are finding this type of problem.
my truck sounds just like zekemans, but maybe not as loud.
i think we all have to remember this engine is big, its using a 20weight oil, it has two timing chains, its aluminum, etc, etc.
mine sounds like a miny diesel, thats the way it is. i think its normal.
now i do not have slap at startup, so i wont comment on that except that if it goes away when warm your fine. Those with slap are most likely just on the far end of the loose tolerance, where those who dont are more towards the tighter tolerance spec. but who knows.
At 1600 miles, my 5.7 is fine so far. Engine revs pretty high at cold start-up but goes right back down after about a minute, other than that no slap at all. Its quiet as a mouse.
On the other hand, my last Silverado with the 6L sounded like a diesel locomotive just about anytime the engine was running......hot or cold. Worst piston slap I've ever heard. God I'm glad that truck is gone.

This is exactly how I feel except the Tundra is the one making all the noise!

Mine has it, but only occurs on the throttle until the truck is starting to warm up

I'm not a good one to ask. I sold the 06 F350 with 6.0 diesel and bought the 07 Tundra 5.7 - Its soooooe quiet - at least to me. Have 1000 miles on it and yesterday morning started up with temps in the 30's - really did not notice any slap or excess noise.
I voted no but really not too sure what you all are talking about when you say "Piston Slap". When my truck first starts, I do hear what I have always equated to the linkage on the lifters chattering but I hear this on my wifes accord with variable valve timing and I heard it on my '05 tundra with the 4.7 VVT engine. It does sound a little "Diesel" like but nothing too loud and it does go away after engine warm up. Is this what your talking about or is it something different??

My truck runs very smoothly and quietly right from start-up. Letting it sit and warm up is not a good thing either. Best to get right to driving, But keep the load and revs down until warm.
No start-up noise here-but I did pass a slow mover yesterday and got down on it to do so, and heard all kinds of ruckus I don't remember hearing before. Maybe that's because I've been listening more intently after reading some of this stuff.
I won't vote until I've been officially told by my dealership it's piston slap.
I maybe should have worded the thread a little differently. The question is really, Do we have a "knocking" sound coming from any part of the engine that does not sound normal?

That's the way mine is. I have really only begun to notice it in the last few days, but my '07 Tundra 5.7 only has about 300 miles on it. Mine's not that noisy, I just notice it for the first few minutes when under load, until it warms up, then it's gone. It sound like a very mild, but detectable knock, but I'm not saying that's what it is...
