This is a discussion thread titled "Best deals on 2006 Tundras?", within the Pricing and Dealers forum, part of the Marketplace Forums category.
I am considering trading in my 2004 access cab for a 2006 double cab but want to keep payments about the same. Does anyone know where to find the best deals on used Tundras, preferably near Winston Salem, NC though I'm up for a drive. Found a nice one at Rice Toyo in Greensboro, NC but they couldn't make the deal work. They have about as good prices as I've found. Any suggestions?
The '05 double-cabs are probably the best bargain right now because they're coming off lease by the truck loads. '06 probably isn't MUCH more, but probably a lot more to pick from in '05. Not aware of any differences between '05/'05.
I just bought an '04 Limited Dcab 2WD w/50k miles for $16k. I found it on ebay and negoiated a price over the phone. While shopping, I found a ton of 04-06 Dcabs on ebay and craigslist around the area. Many of these listings are dealers and are willing to trade, if that's the route you want to go.
I got to the point of telling them: "look, i've already driven several of these, the only reason I'm calling is to discuss price. I'll drive yours after we agree on a deal".
Of course, that will be harder to accomplish since you're wanting to trade.
06 with decent miles 4x4 will run you about $23k 2x4 about $20k. As for where to get one... Don't know for your area. Might I suggest getting a certified used from a toyota dealership

Your best price isn't going to come from a dealer. Lets face it, they are going to have to make money off it and you will never know their cost basis in it so you are in the dark for the most part. Add to the fact you want to trade your old vehicle in so you will loose some value there too. If you want to maximize your dollars it will require you to sell and buy the vehicles on the private market. Check the major pricing sites: edmunds, kelly and Nada for starters. Be fair in your assessment of your vehicle and take the average of the three values as your benchmark. If you sell your truck first, you will get a good look at what the current market in your area is for trucks. With gas hovering around 3 a gallon and talk of recession, it may not be that promising, but you never know.
If you do sell yours for what you want then you can shop for the next one. Again, use the web to establish the price and get a one month subscription to carfax so you can run the vins on any potential candidates. Line up your financing ahead of time so you know how much truck you want/can afford and stay within your boundaries. Figure in your sales tax and licensing fees into the total cost of the purchase.
Sounds like more hassel than its worth? Thats why most dealers count on people buying and trading from them. Just keep in mind that this route will probably cost you between 3-4000 more on the whole trade. Your decision. Good Luck.
Thanks, I usually do hit KBB, NADA, & edmunds for pricing just as you have suggested but I haven't seen any Tundra's for sale outside of the dealers, not even secondary dealers like CarMax. I take that back I did see one on ebay before I found mine but that guy wanted full retail. I've had trouble finding any person to person. Guess I'll get back on ebay. However, I had not considered putting mine on the market first at fair market value then shopping for another. And the gas prices don't seem to bother Tundra shoppers, they seem to be selling off the dealer lots and holding their value even w/ gas at $3. Although I'm feeling the pinch!!! Thankx!

I hope so. I can say the guy at Rice Toyo in Greensboro did try and he called me back (nice 06 4x4 for $21 and change) but he couldn't get my payment low enough to make it worth my while. Again, as someone mentioned that is the problem w/ dealers. They do have to make profits to stay in business. I hope a dealer or two will contact me and want to work out a deal we both benefit from.
