Working on purchasing my Tundra. Your help would be appreciated!
Hey everyone,
I know this is a totally boring topic/ post, but I need your help. Please help...
I am still doing my research while I am trying to sell my F250, and I talked to an internet sales person today that told me that the 15% off of MSRP that I was asking for was $2,000 under her invoice. Can anyone give their input as to if this is true?
Here's the deal.
Truck MSRP is $36,000. I have read in forums about other people getting 18-20% off of MSRP. (I don't know if they got the 0% financing also, and I know this would be a big factor) but I told her that I would also want the 0% financing.
She said that 15% is $2,000 over her invoice, and this was undoable with the 0%!
I guess the main question is, can I trust an internet sales person when they send me a cut/ paste of the truck's pricing (including their invoice prices)? Or can this be easly (and often) altered to trick someone into thinking that their cost is much more than it really is?
She says her invoice for this truck is almost $33K.
Secondary question is: Does that sound right that a dealer's price (invoice) for a $36K truck is $33K?
It is tough to stand up for the 15% and 0% financing that I want with her ammo, and I was just looking for some input as to if what she is telling me (and sending me) is legit, or if I should stick to my guns.. Sorry, I can't remember the price that she ended up quoting me (I remember she said $250 over her invoice), but my main concern is whether I should trust her on HER pricing/ cost? HOW DO I KNOW WHAT SHE SAYS IS HER COST IS REALLY HER COST!!??
Again, any help is much appreciated!

Use CarsDirect.com -- America's #1 way to buy cars online! to see the invoice. Once you've plugged in your zip code, the make/model and options, it will give you MSRP and invoice. This is the official dealer's "cost" for the vehicle.
However, even if they sell the vehicle at this price (or even less) they still make money on the sale through holdback and floorplan. It's not their TRUE cost to purchase the vehicle. You should be able to get a little below invoice, then apply the rebate or financing.

Thanks for your replies so far guys.
toy4x4 man,I am looking at an SR5- Double Cab with Leather, JBL, and a few other "add-on's".
Thirshorseman, your answer is the answer that I am looking for, but are you SURE that it is reasonable to get them just below invoice on the price and THEN ask for the rebate OR financing on top of that?
If that is correct, then am I am being perfectly reasonable in asking for a price of $33K (their stated invoice) and then taking the current $4,000 rebate on top of that and just taking regular financing rates?
Again, anyone else's input on this would be really, really appreciated.
Re: Working on purchasing my Tundra. Your help would be appreciated!
My dad got everything that comes on the limited in his SR5 TRD DC minus the leather and sunroof last Nov. for under $33K. I think he paid $32,500. It does pay to call other dealerships if you have any within reasonable distance and tell them what truck you want and ask the out the door price is! As for Rebate versus 0% it really depends on how long you plan on financing.
Re: Working on purchasing my Tundra. Your help would be appreciated!
I would say hold out for your price.
Based just on the number of Tundras sitting on the lot in my neck of the woods and have not moved for months they maybe playing tough but based on the annoncemnet today of Toyota's profit down approx 24% this year things may loosen up soon.
Re: Working on purchasing my Tundra. Your help would be appreciated!
Look at the window sticker..........it's basically broken down into 3 components - 1. base vehicle model 2. factory options 3. freight/destination. Multiply base vehicle figure by .905, multiply factory options by .80. Add those 2 figures together, plus the freight/destination amount and you will be very close to invoice. From that figure, subtract the current rebate ($4000). Work up from there and remember the dealers gotta eat too.

I am not sure about how it is where you are from but here is what I got
2008 crew max (brand new)
5.7 ltr V8
4x2
Color : slate
10yr/100,000 mile warranty
XM radio
factory backup camera (I do not recommend this option to hard to see it without nav screen!)
color matched lighted running boards
heated tow mirrors ( not powered)
factory auto start
sound system with 6 disc changer (option just below nav)
door sill guards
toyo guard protection plan (had to get it)
TRD off road package
sun roof
Interior light package ( I highly recomend this)
and the tundra mats
all of this and my price on the truck was 36,400
If your dealer price matches I can e-mail you a copy of my window sticker ( I also have 0% financing) the 0% is from Toyota they basically finance the vehicle themselves so no matter what the cost 0% is applicable. also I got the TRD package free b/c I wanted the slate color with sunroof and the only one they had was with TRD and I was like don't want it take it off 2k is way to much for a different rim and a skid plate.
They said they could'nt so I said well Ill go to another Toyota dealer and they ended up taking off the price.

jimbarkleytoyota.com They list MSRP and final price you pay (which includes rebates) on their site. You can give up the rebate in lieu of whatever 0% is being offered at the time. That will give you an idea of what dealers can do. What they will do is entirely up to the dealer, but when I bought mine from Barkley, I made out the check for the selling price and the deal was done. No add-ons, doc fees, etc., no tricks. Just an honest deal for a very fair price.
Oh, I finally had to put my F250 on ebay and take less than I was hoping to get. It was in top notch condition, too.

JBT is a great place to buy, from what I heard.
I wouldn't go so far as to say that it should give you an idea if what other dealers could do. JBT seems to be running a very specific business model. they make very little profit, passing on EVERY incentive they get. but I wouldn't expect them to give you anything else than wholesale for your trade.
if you're local or fairly close, then by all means JBT is the place to go. otherwise I would offer your local dealer at least $1k over the price at JBT.
For a reasonable price ($40 i think) they will send you every tidbit there is to know about that new Tundra sitting on the lot. Prices, rebates and dealer incentives, tons of great negotiating tactics, and industry intelligence on the latest sales figures for your car, softening of sales, etc.
Things to remember:
She is never going to tell you what her real cost is. Even at $2000 below invoice, she will probably still make money on the truck because of the "holdback" from Toyota. This is an incentive from the Toyota that goes to the dealer when they sell a car. Typically its 5-10% of the invoice price if I recall correctly. So basically whenever the dealer sells a car, they get money from Toyota.
You need to decide whether or not the incentive Toyota offers to you is worth more, or if the 0% financing is worth more. Carbuyingtips.com has a nice loan calculator that lets you look at 4 different loan scenarios at once. Really nice for when you are trying to decide how to work your money.
Also in response to your second post: the dealer is offering the Toyota incentive OR the 0% financing -you choose -you get either one independent of the deal you make - that is what their ad says. I have yet to see a dealer say the 0% financing is "only honored on deals they make a lot of money on". It is "with approved credit". The fact that you make a deal below invoice has nothing to do with their terms on the financing. Again, she is just jerkin you around. Although they may not like it, there is no reason for them not to honor their ads. I'd point that out.
Plus I'd point out how truck sales suck right now (better words might be used hah) and just point to all the trucks sitting on the lot. Supply and demand. Too much supply right now, not enough demand. Give me a deal lady and makes some room on your lot, get your dealership that holdback!
