Okay…pls help out, as I think I’m way too close to the numbers that I can’t see if this is a good deal or not. This purchase is in Central Texas.
The facts:
2008 Tundra 4WD Crewmax SB 5.7 Ltd, MSRP $50,324.
Options: 20” Alloy Wheels; DVD Nav w/ BU Monitor; Daytime Running Lites; Fender Flares; Molded Dash Applique; Window Tint: XM Radio; Rear Organizer; “The Extra Mile Option Package” consisting of Custom Tape Stripe, Stainless Steel Exhaust Tip, First Aid Kit, Fabric Guard, Spare Tire Lock, Carpet mat Set, Door Sill Enhancements, running boards, Roadside Assistance (3/30k), Extra Miles Service Rewards Pgm (5/60k); Bedmat, and TRD Dual Exhaust. Total Cost the dealer quoted me for options is $7333.
Here’s what the dealer is saying:
He’ll sell it to me for $41,480 + TTL. (which includes the Feb Tundra rebate).
So what he’s giving me is a $50k truck for $41,480.
When I did some research to get the invoice price, I calculated $39,022 (Base ($38072) + Options ($4950) – Rebate ($4000).
I also read that he’s probably getting a Dealer Hold Back for about 3% of the MSRP ($1510) and a Factory-to-Dealer Incentive of $5000. So his profit would be around $8968 ($41480-39022+1510+5000). Given that he’s making almost $9k, I want to offer $36k to take it off his lot (making his profit about $3500).
BTW: there are 4525 miles on the truck (owner used it as a DEMO). Also, the rear bumper has a few rubs (must have hit a curb or a wall).
I also told him that since I’m in the military and an Alaska resident, that I’d title and license the truck there, and since there’s no sales tax in AK, that TX taxes would not apply (Soldier/Sailor Act). He replied I’d have to pay some documentation and transportation fees. I can live with these (about $850).
Here are the numbers, plus the fact that it’s practically classified as a USED truck. Am I asking too much of a discount? Or is he offering a deal I should take now (because of the Toyota Rebate)?
I know I only have 2 days left. Or I can take the luck of the draw and see if March has a better rebate.
Thx!
“The Extra Mile Option Package” is a real money maker for them.
I guess this is Ltd truck we are alking about right? they retail around $44k or so. add $2500 os so for options, no more. deduct the current customer rebate and then deduct typical dealer's markup on those (around $3k, don't count the options markup as I already included it in 2500 figure).
all these numbers are from the top of my head, I might be wrong, but I would never pay for this truck more than $39k+ttt. that number should be fair enough without tapping into hold back or factory to dealer incentive.
this is a used truck! granted that it will be titled as new, but on the other hand keep in mind that as a demo no one was taking care of it as it were to be a keeper!
Do not even think about the holdback etc, it's unfair, in this business that money is theirs so forget about it, for you it does not exist. and with this economy, factory to dealer money is something to put them through so don't count that money either. otherwise there won't be any local dealers soon to have the truck serviced when you need it.
the bottom line is that I would pay no more than invoice minus current consumer rebate, plus the options (cost). and that's the tricky part here, the options added on are very cheap (I think total $2500 at cost).
I wouldn't pay more than their real cost minus your rebate because this is previous year model AND used truck. but holdback and factory to dealer should not be included in those calculations to determine the cost.
Looked up the USED value of the 2008 Crewmax Limited. Dealer Retail, w/ all the options and mileage adjustment yielded a value of $38,217. I guess if I told them I'll pay #38,500, plus the trade-in value of my 94 GMC PU, then I'll be close to what I wanted to pay altogether. I'll want him to sell it as a NEW vehicle so I can get the Extended Warrantee (from another thread in VT).
I'll see if he has it on the lot next week and if the rebates are still in effect.
