Default Somewhat off topic: Do Sales and Service Depts get along?

I've been along with a friend who is looking for a used Tundra. He's asked the salesperson for a copy of the service history attached to the VIN# of the car (from Toyota). One salesperson quickly obtained the report, another had to go back twice, and a couple of others have said that they COULD NOT get the report, at least that's what they claim the service manager told them. Various excuses followed the no answer.

Is this all posturing and/or some sales tactic or is there some kind of animosity between sales and service? Just curious.

For the most part, sales and service get a long. Now one salesperson may not like someone in service, and that is their problem. On the other hand, if you kept asking people for service history reports and still haven't purchased anything, then maybe they assumed you (or friend) were not that interested and was just wasting their time. Also, the service history is typically only available for that particular dealer. My service people cannot access what other dealers have done.

For future reference, I wouldn't ask for a service report until that is the vehicle decided to best fit your needs, and you want that last bit of info. Other than that, the most you will tell from those reports is how many times the previous owner had their oil changed their, or if they did the other regular maintenance items their. I normally do not get asked for the service history unless their is a question whether the timing belt (if equipped) has been changed or not.

In each case when he found a suitable vehicle to make an offer, he asked for the service report. In one he found several trips to the dealer to fix various electrical issues. He did not make an offer on that vehicle. On the other vehicles, they were too far away on price. Coincidentally, one of the dealers that refused his request saw us drive up in my 06 DC (that I purchased with the help of info from this board). I would think that they would think he's serious, perhaps not.

One question that I have is about those reports. When I bought my 06 (and Sienna) the dealer was able to dig up the service reports from other Toyota dealers. I found the work on the ball-joint, oil changes, etc. For me, knowing that the previous owner took the car in for regular service gave me peace of mind.

My request did not appear to be a strange thing for the salesperson. Sounds like you're saying not all dealers can do this? I did not know this .

every dealership has different rules to what they do or dont allow customers, employees, or salesmen to know. I dont always agree with what each one has decided but that is just how it is.

I get along with service and they have saved my *** on many occassions. Not every dealer can pull up with every other dealership has done. What you mentioned sounds like warranty work. That would show up in a different system. If Joe blow motors did an oil change would not unless that dealership reports service to carfax. Some do, some dont
