buying private sale over distance

I'm looking for any tips folks might have to help protect buyers who are trying to work w/ private sellers over a distance. I'm especially curious about deposits. What are your prefered methods to pay a deposit to hold a deal until you can make arrangements to collect? I havn't tried, but would a seller's bank be likly to agree to hold a deposit in escarow?
