Default Dealer-breakers?

Does it bother anybody that Toyota doesn't even offer a leather-wrapped steering wheel in the SR5 Tundra? You get it in the SR5 Tacoma.

I'm also bugged that Toyota doesn't put an auto-dimming interior mirror on the SR5 trim level; you have to get the Limited.

I guess we all have our pet-peeves, but does this bug anyone else, or is it just me?

The auto dimming mirror is an available option. I had mine put in at our distributor before it arrived at the dealer. The leather steering wheel is just a thing for you I guess. There are websites you can buy one for about $50 out there though.

Haha... thanks for your input. I've gone back and forth between Chevys and Toyotas my whole life. They both put out a great product, especially in the truck segment. I just always thought it was "ticky tacky" that these two options weren't standard, or at least an option in the SR5 package, which puts a truck up over the $30k range. I realize that the electro-c mirror is an option, but I have yet to find a dealer in SoCal that actually takes delivery of one with this option on an SR5. Is it a port or dealer option only like you mentioned?

As for the steering wheel, it's not a huge deal, but again, if you're gonna' spend over $30k for a truck, would just snazz it up a little IMO. Haha... my $20k Tacoma had it - just weird how some manufacturer's decide which options go on what.

This thread was just kinda' for fun, and not to really make a huge beef.

A few more items: I've always had better luck with Chevy's paint. Both Tacoma's had chipping and flaking issues, but my Phantom Grey Tundy was okay. I dig the XM radio and OnStar that comes on the Chevy. Sorry, not trying to make this a C vs. T thread, just brainstorming. Trust me, I love the Tundra, but I also love my Silvi.

The mirror is both a port and dealer installed option.

It's funny you mention Chevy's paint, as I remember all the Chevy's from the late 90s that had most the paint peeled off to the primer because it the paint did not bond to the primer. I haven't seen that yet on a Toyota. As for chipping, if you get a big enough rock, they will all chip, and then it just depends on the color of the paint on how much you notice it. White is the worst as the primer used shows up well between all the white around it. As for OnStar, if you like to pay for that, then that is for you, but I worked for GM for a couple of years and never saw the value in it.

You can get the leather wrapped wheel in the SR5 if you buy the JBL package with the bluetooth.

Like I said, I'm not trying to play devil's advocate, it's just interesting to me where some manufacturer's place their value when deciding what's standard and what's not. Don't get mad, and remember, I do like Toyota, I'm just using this thread to "speak out loud" about my personal observations.

I was sitting in an SR5 Crewmaxx earlier today and it was pretty loaded up with options, and it did have a leather-wrapped wheel with the JBL like SC mentioned (wonder if that's only on the CM?), but it had that cheap dinky rear-view mirror. I like how my side mirrors are auto-dimming (really makes driving at night much more comfortable). Plus, the mirrors auto-fold in, making it really easy to park in tight spots. I have an LT1 trim package with the 5.3L (4spd), 3.73 Rear, stock 20's on nice alloys, and power everything but seats. The MSRP was only like $29,110.00 (not what I paid, of course). It has a ton of convenience features for the people who like trucks as daily drivers - and that's a large percentage of people these days. I do like how the Tundra, even on the Grade model, has rear wheel housing covers.

In comparison though, I just noticed the way they were loading up Tundras (at least in So Cal) was a bit odd. For instance, A DC 5.7L Grade 2wd had the "Cold package" - in SoCal, really? DRL's. Steel wheels - an up-charge on what should be standard? Rear under seat storage box. Sliding rear window. floor mats. Remember though, I'm not a true trucker; I don't pull a boat/trailer and only occasionally haul a load. I guess that's why I can appreciate some of the convenience features, but that's just me. No doubt though, that 5.7L could probably knock the piss out of my 5.3L off the line with about 65 more HP and a much larger rear axle.

As for white paint, and just paint in general, I guess I've just had good luck. Both my '97 and my '08 had/have white paint, and to be honest, they were both my best-looking trucks! My '04 white Tacoma had paint chips on the hood when I bought it, and my '07 Tacoma had what at first appeared to just be water spots ... turns out they were under the clear coat and before I got around to having it fixed, I just decided to dump it. The '07 was the Black Sand Metallic.

Your not wrong about the tundra's lack of fit and finish. Consumer Reports have listed that as a down side with the tundra many times. I've been in quite a few trucks and with what I paid for mine it should have a nicer interior and a few more perks. Then again I did buy it for Toyota's famous reliability. I just wonder when I'm gonna get the recall notice for the ebola rust virus my frame has.

exactly, and like any brand, there will always be pros and cons. there are tons of things i like about toyota and tons of things i like about chevy. the chevy was just more suitable for my needs at the time of purchase, and plus, the 5.3 engine is a brick. true, an older ohv pushrod design, but refined and is both quiet and powerful - not as powerful as the 5.7, but more than enough for most.

i loved the 4.7 in my '05 tundra, but wasn't a big fan of the 5-speed tranny. it was really touchy. the 2.4 in my '04 tacoma was solid as was the 2.7 in my '07. actually, the 2.7 was very strong for a 4-cyl, and was really smooth - just not enough for me.

i love how the 2005+ tacos come with that composite bed with the deck rails - great feature! the interior styling is also top notch imo, plus you get a lthr wrapped steering wheel and shifter with the sr5. best compact/midsize truck on the market!!

worst things about my toyotas were definitely the brakes, more-so on the '05 tundy than the tacos, but they were horrible. i guess i was spoiled on my '01 chevy as it went 105k on the original brakes (i know, i couldn't believe it either, and very rare!). but, at just 16k on the tundy, the fronts were already grinding - just an awful sound.

on the new tundra, i really like that ez down tailgate and i like the fact that the grade model still allows you the column shifter. the gauge cluster is interesting and i actually like the design, but with them being so deep, they can be hard to see. i like the 4-full doors on the dc models rather than the swingouts. interior is nice enough and in fact, the ebony seats on my chevy collect lint like crazy - uuggh - tsb out finally, but they only replace the inserts and the majority of the lint collects on the edges.

will never consider a ford or dodge - just never got good vibes. i feel very comfortable when i'm behind the wheel of either a toyota or a chevy. pricing is very similar on both and reliability on both are great.
