This is a discussion thread titled "extra dealer charge", within the Pricing and Dealers forum, part of the Marketplace Forums category.
Im not sure if this happened to others, but i recently purchased my truck in july of this year. 3 months later my dealership send me a letter saying i owe 80 dollars in dmv fees to them. i recieved my tags and plates from the dmv within 3 weeks of purchasing. i called the dealer and they said they miscalculated the fees when doing the pricing so i owe them. Well, isnt that their mistake after i already signed papers on the final pirce? they keep sending me letters to pay? has anybody had this encounter and what did they do about it. I talked to a dmv employee, they said since i have my plates from them, i dont owe the dealer nothing, it was their mistake. just dont go in and sign new papers. I know its 80 dollars but i didnt make the mistake and i payed enough for the truck. the dealer should eat that shouldn't they? I don't want this goinjg on my credit at all So i ask anybody with knowledge what would u do? I searched for this topic and didnt find, sorry if i reposted, new to this site
People make mistakes. If they over charged you the eighty bucks and you found out later would you not want your money back? It probably is not the first time someone either forgot or did not fill out the paper work correctly. It really is up to you. Maybe if it is an honest mistake you could make an offer to pay half. IMO
you have your truck...made payments...got your plates... and NOW they want more money....they are crazy
My dealer forgot to figure in my payoff on my car when we bought the sequoia... 8k mistake... well I ended up going back in and signing the papers again because it was only right... and legally I was responsible
Ok, seriously... you signed papers agreeing on a specific price. You paid/financed a specific price. In order for them to legally charge you the extra $80, you have to resign papers agreeing to it. If you don't agree to it, then you are not liable for it! Tell them, clerical error or not, I am not responsible for anything over and above the agreed contract. Your out of luck and you have no right to be asking me for more money.
If it had been a case where you had overpaid them... well, that's the car business. Happens all the time. There isn't much you can do after the fact except whine complain about it. Any change in the contract has to be agreed upon by both parties.
So in all reality. No you don't owe them another red cent! you can be nice and just say no, or......Tell them to go blow themself!
If you look on your contract, it should state right next to your dmv fees that it is an estimate. What happened is that they are suppose to charge you the extra 80 bucks for it being a certain weight truck. Trucks have a different license fee than cars. At least that is how it is here in california, I cant state for anything else. Most of the time, they remember but sometimes they forget, that is when they send you the bill. It is a legitimate charge, they just didnt charge you the correct amount for the dmv fees in the first place.
I can see how you wouldnt want to pay though. But on the same topic, we send refund checks to customers all the time for over charging them for dmvs too. They dont seem to mind those as much, lol

Yeah!Give the store another chance.Maybe it's really just honest mistake. We must be tolerant each other. If that happens second time, you need be strict with them.
It's not a "dealer" charge. It's a California DMV charge.(tax) You would expect a refund if they estimated too high?? Pay it, and deduct it from you taxes!
