Opinions on this quote a dealer gave me (trading 05 sr5 dbl to crewmax)
I was dealing with a dealer in San Diego today and they told me that they could get me the truck I wanted which is a Black SR5 TRD Crewmax. He told me that he could sell it to me for $1000 below MSRP. Before that I had asked them what they'd give me for my trade-in which is an 05 SR5 Tundra DBL Cab with factory Nav and leather and 27,000 miles (EXCELLENT Condition) and their response was 17500 is the most they could give me. Seems like they're trying to get me in both ends of the deal doesn't it? It seems to me they're pretty low on the trade-in and still pretty high on the price for the new truck. Just looking for some opinions is all that I'm doing. Maybe this is how all the dealers are going to be and I should just stick with my 05 if that is the case.
Re: Opinions on this quote a dealer gave me (trading 05 sr5 dbl to crewmax)
This board is full of people who have bought for $500 to $1000 over invoice. $1000 below MSRP is no deal at all!! Look up invoice prices on KBB.com or edmunds.com and also check the value of your truck at the same websites. Good Luck!

I traded in my 2004 Quad Cab Hemi Laramie 4x4 amd it had 103,850miles and i got $16,800 for it. I just got my crew max last week and the MSRP was right at $43,000 and i paid $39,270.(that was the price before i started adding on other things, price came out to like $42,000 when done) Granted my mom used to work there and i have known these people for about 13yrs but i still think you can do better.

A couple of comments and questions:
Question #1. 5.7L or 4.7L engine? 4x2 or 4x4? Opting for the 5.7L and/or a 4WD will hike up your price as those options are in high demand. Did the dealer say he'd have to "order" one for you or do a "dealer trade?"
Comment #1. In regards to your trade, $17,500 seems low as I received $17,600 for my '05 AC SR5 4x2 TRD w/ ~42k/mi. They initially offerd me $3k "back of wholesale book." However, I had them step up $1000.
Previous generation Tundras like your's, unfortunately aren't worth a whole heck of a lot right now, due to the popularity of the new ones, and with gas prices out of control. Although KBB will only give you a ballpark price range, start there. No dealer will ever allow the KBB "excellent" condition on your trade. When you go back to the dealership, ask to see the wholesale/retail breakdown sheet and figure about $2000 less than what the wholesale price says. Models that are more in demand, will draw closer to the actual wholesale value.
Also, if you go to another dealer, don't bring your trade up until after you reach an agreement on the price of your new vehicle. On that note, decline to talk about financing until later too.

Dianne in San Juan Capistrano can do way better than that. Also try Costco if you are a member. They advertise that they can broker a deal to about $3200 off MSRP. I intend to get a quote from Costco and give Dianne a shot at my business when the time is right. In this case, I want to pay off the last of my credit card debt. Poway Toyota was offering 3-4K off of MSRP about 3 weeks ago if you are not a Costco member. Also try contacting an internet/fleet sales manager locally if San Juan Capistrano is too far.
Re: Opinions on this quote a dealer gave me (trading 05 sr5 dbl to crewmax)
The one I want has the 5.7 in it and its 2wd. I know that's a pretty bad deal they're trying to give me. I'm always about getting the "out the door price first" but this clown I was dealing with had already lost my sale before #'s even came up. It's a new dealership and it's obvious that they're still working the querks out.
As for the payoff on my truck, it's pay'd off and I'm already pre-approved financing up to $50,000 with my bank. I would think normally this would give me some bargaining power but here SD it doesn't really seem to be happening. Nobody wants to hear that your shopping around and that you're making a decision in the next month, not today.
I have thought about contacting Dianne up in San Juan but I just haven't went that route yet.
Anyone think I should maybe just wait till this fall???

Yeah, if you're not happy with the service and/or the general buying atmosphere, try another dealer. As for OTD prices, don't let that dissuade you as they are easy to calculate on your own.

Unlike most business' where cash is king, it's quite the contrary in the auto biz. Most vehicles nowadays have low margins on the front end 'cause evryone has access to pricing on the Internet (and dealers know that). Sooo...if they can't make money that way, they have to try and recoup on either your trade, or see if they can get you to finance with them at a higher rate that what they bought it (the money) at. This is why it's always a good idea to keep these three transactions seperate.
I dont know what you told the salesman upfront, but think about it...if he knows your vehicle is paid off, and that you're gonna' cut 'em a check from your own bank, where they can't make money on the rate, then the only profit he sees is in the price of the new vehicle.

I would, especially if gas prices keeps rising; nobody will be able to move those fuel guzzlers.
Re: Opinions on this quote a dealer gave me (trading 05 sr5 dbl to crewmax)
Two dealerships here have quoted me $1k over invoice for an SR5 Crewmax 4x2 5.7L. PM me the dealer to which you are referring and if you want more details on the ones I'm working with.
Re: Opinions on this quote a dealer gave me (trading 05 sr5 dbl to crewmax)
What we did was haggle them down to a price we like first. THEN see what we can get on the trade in and tell them we are going to finance the longest we can. I also make sure there are no penalties for pre payment (Paying the loan off early) We then finalized the deal and when the first payment came we paid the whole thing off. Thsi was becasue every time we mentioned we were paying cash they did not want to deal.
This was in 01 on a 2001 Camry.
