I don't hang out in this group much, so I apolgize in advance if this has been asked.
What is the low-down on buying a used Prius? I've heard that the more miles on it, the more the batteries start to have problems hold a charge. And if you try to replace the batteries, it often costs more than what the car is worth in the Blue Book.
I've got my eye on a first-generation Prius to use for commuting and I want to make sure it is a good investment.
All a man really needs for happiness in this world is a good woman, a faithful dog, and a big-a$$ed set of tires on his truck.

Having had the luxury of driving municipal 1st gen Priuses as well as 2nd gen, I will tell yu that with 1st gens:
They are POS ..falling apart.
Handles like a golf cart.
Transmissions Run worse than in my $20 Toys R Us radio control car.(Lurch and Jump , Hard shifts)
Are electrical nightmares.
This municipality has many just sitting as parts vehicles. Toyota can't seem to fix most of them and claim they have voided or exceeded the warranty.
This municpality chose a fleet of Hybrids to boost its "Green Image" and save money.
Yet they have become a blunder reminding me of the Chrysler K-Car era when they got many K-cars (Reliants) and they just sat in fleet lots for more two decades as they deteriorated.
LT
They are disposable vehicles at best.
I would not touch it with a ten foot pole.
Yu are better off with a ten year old Corolla or Civic.
2nd gen is a diff story altogether.

Wow, I almost got a 1st generation Prius. I didn't know they had that many issues . Thanks for the information, I will pass it on to other used Prius shoppers.
