PriusGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Prius.
This is a discussion thread titled "Whats the lastest on XM Radio?", within the Prius forum, part of the Cars & Vans Forums category.
It it my understanding the XM Radio will be arriving as a option in April 06. Anybody know anyother details, ie, will it have XM Traffic Nav to interface with the NAV system...
I have an 06 Prius with NAV and it came satellite ready. Either XM or Sirius. Had XM installed by a local shop. Flawless integration. Though the display is pretty clunky and the song ID has limited space for full display of song titles and artist.
I did discover one big hitch with the bluetooth on the vehicle though, my Treo 650 was completely incompatible. Must be some strange unique RF blocking the handshake with that device. I got a blackberry 8700c and the connection is 99% automatic.
The "factory" XM and Sirius add-ons (available next month?) are supposed to exceed the 10 digit song display limitation of the current offerings; I'm going to wait a few more weeks!
My Cingular Treo 650 works just fine. But, it didn't work at all before I downloaded the latest firmware patch from my provider. Hope this hint works for you.
You can get an add on XM radio at coastaltech.com/04prius.htm. This unit plugs into the existing harness and is controlled like the installed radio. Looks pretty cool, saw it on the site yesterday and am considering ordering for my 05. The main unit is hidden and they provide instructions on installation. I have bought from them before and they are a reliable company.
The factory XM add-on is Tuner Assy 86180-0W030 and Mounting Kit PT546-47060

I called my local dealer to ask about XM...the conversation kind of went like this:
"Do you have the factory XM tuner for the 06 Prius"
"Yea, we have the Satellite tuners".
"Right...do you have the ~XM~ tuner?"
"Oh yea, we have the Sirius tuner".
"No, I'm looking for the XM tuner".
"The satellite tuner?"
"Yes...the XM tuner".
"Wait, let me check..."
"Yea, we have em."
"The XM tuner?"
"Ah, no...we have the Sirius tuner".
"OK, thanks."
So clearly, this guy is still on the "Free FM" bandwagon & isn't a SAT user yet himself.
Thanks for providing the part numbers...now I can cut to the chase next time I call!
So, I called back this morning...the xm tuner 86180-0W030 appears to be readily available, but accroding to the parts tech, Toyota as imposed a "stop sell" on the PT546-47060 mounting kit. Since it sounds like one is no good without the other, not sure what this means. The tech said he would "call Toyota" and let me know what the story is.
Since these are special order parts, I want to make sure I'm ordering the right things, since they're non-returnable. The prices he gave me were $276 for the tuner & 138 for the mounting kit.

Did the dealer confirm that these are the correct part numbers for the 2006 Prius?
Well, he confirmed that they were valid part numbers, and that they appeared to be for satellite radio. I did tell him I was looking for parts for the 06 Prius.
Based on my previous message, I expect that YMMV when speaking to these guys, probably because this stuff is so new, and they probably won't get much call for it. When it comes time to place the order, you can bet I'm going to ask that question at least 3 different ways to make sure I'm getting the right stuff.
This is my first post. I have a new 2006 Tundra with navigation system and also have a 2001 Sequoia with an added XM radio. I asked the place that installed this radio about installing one on my Tundra and he advised that I wait until early Jan. 2007 as there would be available an XM radio to install behind my Tundra radio and it would function on its own band with display on the screen. Any advise on this? Thanks.
