Re: sound proofing for Prius?
I ordered my Prius almost 2 weeks after my brother got his Prius. Because of the road noise I noticed in his, I decided to get the dealer undercoating if it was offered. It was.
When I got my Prius from the dealer last week, I noticed it is significantly quieter than my brothers' (but still pretty noisy when compared to "quiet" cars). I believe the most of the noise is coming through the doors (a few posts on PriusChat.com tend to agree with this).
I have seen pix of people installing sheets of pipe wrap (insulating foam - Frost King and other brands) under the carpets of their Prii. This would be a bit time consuming as the seats and carpeting would need to be removed, but I think it would be helpful. I think for me, though, I'd start with the doors.
There are also products out there which are supposed to improve the sound of your door speakers -- I believe it is the same idea: Dampen out the outside sound, and at the same time, reduce/eliminate the normal vibration of the door when the speaker is producing sound. I would think most any kind of pipe wrap will do (it is flame resistant as well as its insulating properties). Don't use the pipe tape (narrow strips like a roll of duct tape), use the wide stuff (looks like a fat roll of aluminum foil). It covers a wider area faster. It all also has an adhesive backing to help it attach to the floor/door/trunk area you are covering.
Look around on PriusChat.com, there are a couple of guys who have done some amazingly cool modifications on their Prii, and they've even posted "how to" pix on their sites!
Happy Driving!
