Questions & CommentsQuestions, comments, suggestions, and complaints regarding Tundra Solutions.com.
This is a discussion thread titled "Site can be slow", within the Questions & Comments forum, part of the General Forums category.
Occasionally the site will run slow, page requests taking a while to be served. (sometimes I wait up to 30 seconds for a page to be served). It is not client location, browser or platform specific. I have read a complaint on another forum that claimed "that site" (referring to TS) "is always offline" - which is a gross exaggeration IMHO. Does TS plan to increase capacity?
The delay appears to be DB access related, and not general bandwidth.
Some moderators and myself have experienced this same problem. But ironically, this morning I'm not getting any drag. I did have some ActiveX compatibility issues in my registry, but AVG took care of them yesterday. Maybe that is contributing to my increased page loading speed? I'm not 100% certain yet.
But I am pretty confident that the ads on the page, as with every page, do contribute to the slowness of the page loading. But, ToyotaNation takes the cake being the worst I've ever been to with regards to slow loading. You can change some settings in your UserCP that may help with loading speeds. ebay ad OFF, Signature Limits per page = ON, Posts to display = 15, etc. Minor tweaks I know, but every little byte counts.

not only has it been slow but its still almost impossible to access with windows mobile devices. The site still needs upgraded to allow us on the go to have access with out dragging a laptop around.

Noted. This is an important observation. I'll pass this information onto Tundrasoul.
Thank you.

The only time I notice it being really slow is between about 10pm to 1am Pacific time on a daily basis. (1am-4am Eastern) (Approximate times)
I think TundraSoul may have said something before about that being the time that site maintenance happens...everyday.
That would explain why Ponyuk was experiencing it last night when he posted, I was experiencing the same thing as I do everynight...it's kinda how I decide it's time for bed, haha.
If the slow is happening at other times, I don't know what's causing that.

In the late evening after 10pm PT is when the server does it's updates and backups, which are server intensive. There's simply no way to speed it up atm other than adding additional more expensive database and backup servers.
Things should improve some after the photo gallery is merged into the forum soon and gigs of unlabeled photos are deleted from the daily backups.

Why not change the time to later - like 3:00AM. 10PM is way too early for such tasks. 10 PM Pacific is still Internet Prime Time.
I don't post much yet as I'm still a new Tundra owner - only 3500 on my 08 DC. But the wealth of info on this site is one of the primary reasons I bought my Tundra. I get frustrated as can be as the only time I can get online here is after about 11:00PM Mountain. Arggh! Most every night I get server time outs and page hangs. Sometimes I give up in disgust ... and then cry cause I can't get my TundraSolutions fix.
I dont have problems accessing from my phone...but yes 10 pm is way to early, I get bumped often...then like MX said, I just go to bed LOL
This site is ALOT better than most...in many regards. IMO

Yes. Yes it is. But I am merely stating the obvious and a common time for scheduled server backups and maintenance. I've had internet servers for business purposes. We scheduled the backups and regular maintenance by viewing the server logs and then running them during the lowest server activity.
In the case of Tundra Solutions, 3:00AM may or may not be the optimum, but it'd be better than 10:00. I'd check the server logs and see when the West Coast night crowd drops off significantly, and when the East Coast morning crowd starts coming on. Then I'd schedule the backups and maintenance in between those times.
Edit ...
Now if you're merely renting space on the server, tell the hosting company they are making your site unusable during prime time - and they need to reschedule the backups and maintenance to a much later time. If that fails, go shopping for a hosting company that has a clue. None I know of would schedule routine backups and maintenance at such an hour as 10:00 PM.
