RAV-4 radio blotches on display

My 2006 RAV-4 with standard stereo has an intermittent problem where the normally legible screen display will suddenly show H" and 12 blotches in the place of the normal legible figures. The dealer said that unless it is doing it while they have the car that nothing can be done. I did take some digital pictures of it yesterday while it was doing this and intend to make them fix it or replace the unit. I was just wondering whether anyone else had encountered this problem.

I would push the dealer to replace it. I just had my dealer replace our whole radio due to intermittent skipping/reading problems with the CD player. They ordered a replacement unit and I dropped the RAV in one day and they swapped for a new one.

BTW, I've read on anothe forum (dedicated to the RAV) that there are others that have had the same issue as you are describing and have received new radios.

There is actually a TSB out for this I believe...apparently they will install a new radio

They will. After 11 months of problem-free operation my radio started having the display problems just the other day. I get the new one installed next week, which the dealer ordered on my request - I didn't have to prove in advance that I was having the issue.

Kern Toyota in Winchester, VA sure popped my bubble today regarding my now funky acting ($640) JBL premium stereo option. I have the same display issues as noted time and again in here and on another forum. I went to the dealer with the Radio Display Malfunction TSB in hand but the Service Manager simply dug her heals in and said they would have to determine if the radio was malfunctioning and she could not just take my word for it. She acted as though she had never heard of the issue before and looked up the TSB on her computer, as if I had somehow obtained a counterfeit copy.
Long story short ... my (now "X") dealer would only make good on the JBL if they determined it to be necessary and those of us with the display problem know that it is very sporadic as to when the LCD screen goes wacko. Fat chance it would actually happen during the brief scheduled appointment in the dealer's hands. Some have suggested that I photograph the radio when this happens but at 65MPH on I-81 ... maybe not. There are many times when my display simply goes blank and a photograph of that would mean nothing.
To those of you who are having the display problem, I wish you the best of luck at your dealership since mine seems to really suck over this issue!

On the JBL package, what is the "text" button for? I've seen CD Players which will display artist name and track, if the CD is so coded. My radio (07 Rav4 Limited) has never shown anything in the display except disc number and track number.

I did get the Toyota Dealer in Baton Rouge to change out my radio after showing them the pictures of the display problem showing indistinguishable blobs rather then numbers and letters on the display screens. One word of caution: Remove your CD's from the radio before the dealer changes your radio out as the old radio gets shipped back to Japan for refurbishment and the local shop cannot retrieve your CDs from the radio once it is removed from your vehicle.

I was also wondering what the text button is for? I have pushed it when playing cds and also my ipod. It doesn't do anything for me???

Try playing a CD-ROM filled with songs in MP3 format. The TEXT button will cycle through the ID3 tag information for each track showing title, artist, folder, disc number, track number, etc. If you hold down the TEXT button until it beeps, it will scroll across to show the next 12 characters of info.
