Just bought the 2008 RAV4 V6. Like to do my own oil changes. Plan the first one at 1,000 miles. Do I need to drop a shield in order to access the filter??
Have not been under the car yet. Very cold here.
For $10 you can download any part (or all) of the Toyota Factory Repair manual here: https://techinfo.toyota.com/ Oil filter change procedures on some 2008 models are alot different than they used to be.

I just changed the oil for the first time on my 07 Rav4 V6 (bought it new long after the 08s came out). I got a 65 MM endcap oil filter wrench from NAPA, but I still couldn't turn the filter cap. Finally removed the splash shield and tapped at the wings on the housing to get it to turn. Maybe next time the NAPA endcap will turn it.
Do have one problem. I wound up with one part left over. The splash shield has a number of screws and a number of push-in fasteners. All the push-in fasteners have black pins except one, which is light grey. Where does the light grey one go? I filled all the holes I could find and I have the one grey fastener left over.
Used the OEM filter medium and Mobil 1 oil. I talked with the service manager at the dealership and he advised that there is no need to wait a specific period to change out the original dino oil to syn. I have always waited a couple thousand miles to facilitate break-in, and did so again this time.
I'm a Honda devotee making my first venture with a Toyota. I hate the local Honda dealer, but I don't think the Toyota dealer is any better. Guess I'd be arrogant, too, if I sold such great products. But with Hondas on syn oil, I got 400,000 plus miles out of an 86 Civic SI and a 91 Accord SE. Bought the RAV4 to replace a car, a van AND a pickup. Bought a trailer hitch from JC Whitney (just like OEM) and I'm towing without the towing package. Works very nicely except for braking, which I find is a weak spot for the RAV4 anyway.
Only other gripe: I have the Limited without leather, and the upholstered door panels and arm rests get dirty very quickly. I use my RAV as a utility vehicle and it's hard to keep the interior clean.
Any help on the light grey fastener on the splash pan is appreciated.
Oh, one other problem. My deluxe radio supposedly has a "text" feature, but none of my CDs show up any textual info. Is this a defect?
Can anyone put up a picture of where the oil filter housing is for the 2008 Rav 4 V4 engine? I'm not too ignorant (I do my own oil changes on my Tundra) but I could not for the life of me find the oil filter for my sister's RAV 4, the V4-I4? engine.

It is hard to find, because the oil pan is black and the filter is black. But it is "right there". At the front passenger corner of the oil pan, there is a recess and it is up there, open end up. It's easier to find if you're on your back looking up.
Do people use a special tool to remove the cartridge filter end cap? Or do you just use a pipe wrench type set of pliers? I just bought a 2009 RAV4 V-6 two weeks ago.
You need a special tool. Don't use a pipe wrench, you'll mess it up. The adapter is cheap and you'll use it for all of your oil changes. Hint: don't crank down on it with a wrench.

Well, I just stopped by Toyota parts and the guy said he wasn't aware of any special tool for the cartridge filter. He said that he thought the techs were using something from snap-on, but the tech at the counter said he just uses a screw driver to tap on it some until it loosens enough to open it by hand.
I was planning on getting the wife a 09 Rav are you guys saying it does not have a spin on oil filter? My 5.7 Tundra has one of those dumbass cartridge filters, I hope the Rav does not.

For 2009, both the 3.5L V-6 and 2.5L I-4 have the cartridge filters. The older 2.4L I-4 from previous years has the typical spin-on filter.
Word is they're changing over to the cartridge type to cut down on landfill waste.
