On my wife's 2005 RAV-4, I have lost 3 tires to internal tire failure in the last 35000 miles. These (oversize for load rating) tires were run inflated from 27-29 PSI. I just put a set of undersized Pirellis P4 205-65R-16. Hope they do better; i am going to run them at 33psi F and 31 psi R with no heavy cargo. When the tires fail they make a sound on that axle as if the wheel bearing was failing ( or cv joint) a constant womp womp and gRRRRRR. Very noisy.
The OEM tire warranty was worthless. Other than this the car has been pretty reliable for a tin can. - grumpy
I haven't heard of this type of problem before. There are several friends of ours that have RAV's and none of them have had any sort of issues with tires failing. Hope you find a solution soon!

Well - Hopefully the (Brazillian) Pirelli will do the trick. I also had the Dealer adjust the rear toe from way-in to be slightly-in. The xs toe was causing a fair amount of scrub and feathering on the rears.

that combined with the low inflation could cause early failure. Did you rotate them regularly?

Rotated tires every oil change (5K). BTW, 'm not a fan of rotaing tires if there is an suspected alignment issue - the rotation just masks the problem until you are at 35K miles and all the tires are worn out! Also if these is a large camber difference form rear to front I woulndt rotate. Ive seen internal failures do to the rolling-set being changed at axle-axle rotation and causing internal heat.
Randy - It's Not MY car. Its my wife's; I couldn't keep up with minor maintenance on spouses car AND my car. Within 2 psi of recommended inflation pressure at 20% of MAX GVWR is NOT chronically underinflated. I run my Chevy Truck 2psi over on front and 1 psi UNDER on rear - given its NOT loaded to MAX GVWR. The tires are rated a TON (2K lb) above the max GVWR of the vehicle - which is Overspecified - which leads to MFG SPECIFIED UNDERINFLATION. A proper load specified tire for highway use should be inflated to a MIN of 31 psi.

Help me remember back. Was it 1977 for the Firestone 500 recalls? I had the tires which matched by serial, but I couldn't get Firestone to do anything. I elected to pay for new tires. It wasn't right, not fair and I had no further trouble. Sometime tires are good, sometimes not. If you don't have a family attorney on retainer, you got to buy your own tires sometimes.

How many times did you align the vehicle during this 35K miles? Tire Tech Information - Alignment average alignment time frame i think is 10K or 1 year which no one does but i would do one around 15 to 20K or every other year but as in this article explains anytime you think something might have been damadged as hitting curbs, tires and alignment need checked. My wife called me one night and said HELP!! i had a flat and being about 1/2 mile from home i went to help her and she did not have 1 flat she had 2 flats, also a curb jumped in front of her and blew out both rt hand tires and ruined both rims and rt front strut bent. tires need an alignment if you want the best tread wear possible, 30 or 35K on a set of tires and no alignment will show wear depending on front end measurments and what has worn.
So which tire Toyo makes were you using on your Rav4, size? type? lotta info not given ? little carrot about being oversized did not help anyone much or was that all we were ever going to hear?
Hog - I didn't want to get into heavy specifics on this, I was just curious if there was a bunch of tire failures with the OEM tire on the Rav. Again; The car has had its tires rotated every OCI (~5K mi) and has had two alignments performed within 0-40K miles. I have never had tire failures on any car I've owned and I've owned over 50 vehicles, many driven at super-legal speeds (in my youth - when the interststes were relatively clear of traffic). Remember, this is my wife's car that get a 50-50 mix of 30mph secondary and 70mph highway roads, 35 miles 1-way per day, 5 days a week. BTW I have a degree in mechanical engineering and was an automotive master tech in the 70's. I am currently in higttech manufacturing of automotive telecommunications and medical electronics. - Grumpy in Wilmington (at work)
I don't have them (the tires) anymore, but the OEM on the base RAV4 in 2005 was a Toyo 205 70R 16 99S. Dont recall model name - will look at the spare tonight if I can get the cover off it - its warm today so I may have some luck! But if no one is having problems its all acedemic. Maybe they got into some bad AIR ...
feather wear is usually an indication of suspension issues i think? like you said tires gone problem gone, would not surprise me if alignment was off from get go! Tundras are having this issue and noone catching it till OEM tires are worn on outer edges, kinda good though, means time to put some quality tireson them vs OEM chep tires. Saw a Cadillac today the Escalde brand new had Bridgestone HT OEM on it?
The new Pirellis p4 are a GIANT leap beyond the OEM Toyo stockers in ride comfort, road noise and handling. the only thing I could bitch about (and its MY fault) is when I went one size UNDER (to 205-65-16) the higway revs went up and the speedo went UP for same road speed. Sh'es revvin about 3000 on the highway at about 70mph. A bit high for this engine and vehicle weight. So nextime (if there is a next time, moron that later) I'll go oversize to 225 75R 16
