RAV4General discussion forum for the Toyota RAV4.
This is a discussion thread titled "5W-20 OIL O.K. in 2005 2.4 Litre?", within the RAV4 forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
Do any of the experts (or ysperts) on here know if these is a TSB recommending the use of 5W-20 in the OLDER 2.4L (as in: 2005 MY). My wife's car is pretty noisy in the valve train after a recent oil change (level check OK) and was wondering if they may have done a refill with the 5W 20. The R.O. doe s not state oil weight.
ILSAC GF–4 ENGINE OIL RECOMMENDATION – EG018-06 March 29, 2006
Engines That Can Use 5W–20 and 0W–20:
OIL ENGINE
ILSAC GF–4 SAE 5W–20
AZ series
GR series
JZ series
MZ series
NZ series
RZ series
UZ series
VZ series
1ZZ–FE
2TR–FE
ILSAC GF–4 SAE 0W–20
(Beginning with 2006 MY)
2AZ–FE Camry
2AZ–FE Solara
2AZ–FE Highlander
2AZ–FE RAV4 (ACA3#)
NOTE:
DO NOT use these oils in engines other than those listed above. These low–viscosity
oils cannot maintain lubrication effectiveness in engines with older designs and could
result in smoke emissions from the tailpipe and/or unusual engine noise.

Now I have to figure out what engine I have in the 2005 Rav (I will look in the owner's manual tonight - I read it through cover to cover once and it ain't even MY car). BTW, I will NOT run the 5W-20 in this engine; you cannot clearance an engine for 10 cSt running kinematic viscosity and expect it to run without major resonances, piston slap, etc on a 6 cSt oil. The Toyota God cannot not repeal the laws of physics and hydrodynamic lubrication. Just light to moderate slap will retard the timing and everything will go to shine-ola from there. My neighbor got a new 2006 Kia 1.6L (yechh) and they started putting the 5w20 in the motor and it collapsed a piston skirt about 2k mi after the first oil change with the 20W. Knocking like carzy and killed the power.
g in nh, i would agree with you that the 5w-20 (slightly thicker than
tap water) oil is pretty thin. my camry 2.4 chain engine makes more
noise than i would like but it hasn't failed yet.
on my 06 camry and 06 tundra i run the following:
winter 5 x 30
summer 10 x 30
spring & fall 7.5 x 30
i've seen the damage done over the years so i change mine every
three months. regardless of mileage. average about 1400 miles per change.
