Default Peeling paint 2008 RAV 4

Hi-
I am looking to see if others have experienced peeling or chipping paint on their RAV4s. Ours is a classic silver metal AWD that has had no hard driving yet, certainly nothing on bad roads. It has about 2200 miles on it, only 3 months old. We have been very conscious of potential damage to the edge of the tailgate door and always look for adequate clearance when we open it.

Despite all of that, we found the paint gone on the edge of the door this past weekend. When we looked closer it didnt' really look like a chip, per se, it looked more like a peel, as the edge of it had what looked like crumpled paint on it (like a piece of paper would look if you pushed it in from one edge). Again, we don't know what caused it, but if the paint is very sensitive and had adhesion problems, just rubbing it when we are loading the back of the SUV could have done this.

I really love this vehicle, but now I am worried that I now own a piece of junk. I have owned one camry and one ES 300 Lexus, and my husband has owned a couple of Toyotas too, and neither of us have ever had problems with the paint on those vehicles. Then again, none of them was younger than 2000 models.

I have read on-line about the water-based paints that Toyota now uses, and I have also read that the 2005 Tacoma's were the subject of a petition because of problems those owners had with the poor paint. There were lots of complaints there about door chips. I don't see much about RAV4s, but some complaints.

So, if any of you RAV4 owners have experienced disappointing paint chipping or peeling, I want to hear from you. I am afraid this is a systemic problem that is only going to get worse the longer we have the car. I intend to take pictures and make sure it is all documented with the dates and mileage. I have already reported it to Toyota Customer Service, and we will soon be visiting the dealership to have them look at it.

Thanks.

I have an '08 silver with 4000 miles and have not had a problem yet. As a matter of fact, compared to the MINI water base paint, this toyota paint is FANTASTIC, Tim

Has anyone gotten the SIMONIZE treatment from the dealership on the paint? Is it worth it or a scam?

I have an 08 RAV 4 and noticed the same thing. We bought it in October and I found a few chips on the edge where the driver's door meets the rear door. It is in an odd place so I doubt it is environmental. I don't think mine is crumpling, as you described.

I showed the dealer and all I got was a free tube of touch up paint. I am keeping an eye on it to see if it worsens.

Don't bother with any $Dealer applied waxes$ or paint sealants!!

It is just Dealer Fluff that offers no benefit to yu ...just pure $$profit$$ for them.

If yu have paint defects in damage prone areas...TMS/ Dealer will just say it is your fault. If yu can prove that the defects are in areas that is not suceptible to damage and truly peeling or separating from the Primer coat then Toyota must honor the warranty.

There have been several major issues with Dark Metallic Green paint on hundreds of Camry's back in the 80's. It was factory applied painting Defects. Brand new Camry's were peeling like crazy and also pitting.

Toyota had to have them repainted. My body repair shop where I worked at the time had a contract to completely bead blast/strip the paint to the metal.(apparently there was contamination at the primer level.)

It was costing Toyota $6K per Camry. It only affected Camry's with this Green Color. Many owners got paint this job seven after several years of ownership. Thes Camry's were produced in Kentucky's Plant.

I don't feel that waterbased paint is the issue. Probably factory environmental factors or defective primers were used.
Waterbased paint is very durable like the old stuff. Many don't understand this.
I would hassel TMS to resolve this. A $5.00 bottle of OE touch up paint is a small consolation/offering by the dealer for yu to go away.

I have seen two Classic Silver 2009's (Matrix S and Corolla XLE) the paint is fine in all areas. These were both built in Cambridge, Canada.
The paint defects are usually isolated to a specific production Plant.

Where was yours produced? NUMMI, Kentucky, Cambridge. Japan?

What was the production date found on the drivers door jamb?

Hi All,
This is my first post here and I wish it was a happy one as I love my new 2007 RAV4. The problem, when I returned from vacation 2 weeks ago and was washing the RAV4 of dreaded love bugs, I found not 1, not 2, not 3 but 5 chips of paint out of my hood. I was sick. The chips are right down to the gray primer coat. A trip to the dealership was totally disheartening. "The chips are from road hazards and not Toyota's fault and it certainly isn't inferior paint. I pointed out that my 10 year old Camry paint was perfect except for the driver's side mirror. The hood was flawless, so how could a vehicle 6 month old have chips of paint like that??? A shrug of the shoulders was the answer on this question. Additionally, I was told touch up paint would make it look worse AND if I had it repainted, "The same thing will happen again". My dealerships response, nothing and I mean nothing can be done. I WILL NOT settle for that answer.
I walked through the used car section and found several Toyota's 2006 and older with chipped paint on the hood. Of course Toyota can't admit there's a problem as it would cost major $$$$$$ to fix.
OK everyone, suggestions. I'm just suppose to leave the chips with the primer coat exposed and there is no hope. What will my vehicle look like in a year or 2. And a new paint job wouldn't help? You've got to be kidding me. My vehicle is a 2007, 100% made in Japan, RAV4 V6 Limited. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry , but a bottle of touch up paint is your only way to keep those chips from rusting out over time. Primer should not be left bear.

A very steady hand and perhaps some small pieces of tape could keep the chips respectable looking. The chipps should be free of wax and dirt...use some alcohol to wipe down area first. just two light dabs of paint is all that is required. Just enough to cover the primer.

I have chips from day one on my 06 HL. I would rather have touched up chips than a rusted hood. With patience and some experience yu will develope a knack for it.
Trust me...primer left unpainted will eventually rust.

Always shake the bottle well.
Don't know what else to offer yu as a solution.

Get the touch up paint and fix the spots. That will help keep them from getting worse or letting rust get started there.

If you have blobs of paint from the touchup, you can try some Langka Blob Eliminator to smooth out the spots. It's not cheap but it works as they claim if you follow the directions.

I've used it on several of my vehicles over the last few years and been pleased with how they turned out. The paint may not match perfectly, but it'll be close and look better than rust spots or blobs.

Oh, but don't let the Langka get too cold as it will go bad. My bottle got left in my garage over the winter and I had to throw it out and get another bottle.

Thats electrolytically applied primer and should not rust. I see paint chips on my wifes rav4 about 8-10 count approx 2-3mm dia. after 3 years on the (60K) highway.
What do you want: a rock going 100MPH closing speed hits a painted surface and it s NOT supposed to chip? You can apply a rubberised coating on the leading edge of the hood - but it prob wont do anything. a sponge-tape applied wind deflector is the only safe bet. Now you'll get windshield cracks Ther are OTHER thing to worry about than a few paint chips ... Like Defective Thailand-sourced toyota oil filters ruining your engine

Yes, I'm having problems with the paint on my 2008 Rav 4 too - mine is chipping and scratching, but not peeling. I have the Pacific Metallic Blue - it's a beautiful color but it chips easily and shows every little mark. Even my fingernails leave marks when I open the driver's door (and I have short nails!). I took the car through a car wash once and it scratched both front doors so now I have to wash it by hand (no pleasant task in the Ohio winter). I'm taking it in to the dealer tomorrow to have the light scratches buffed out and I'm definitely going to complain about the overall paint job. I like the car otherwise, but I'm afraid it'll be a rust-bucket in a few short years.

I'd like to hear from others having this problem, so I have some ammunition when talking with the dealer.

I've had the peeling paint problems with my 2006 Matrix, and now my 2008 matrix. BOTH were the cosmic blue. These ARE NOT paint chips--it looks like the paint has been almost melted off, down to the primer. My 2008 matrix only has 5500 miles on it!!

I DID NOT have the auto armor paint warranty on the first car, and the dealer refused to do anything to help me out. On my new car, I purchased the coverage. I will keep you posted what the deal says when I take it in next week. I firmly believe this is a defect of some sort.

What can happen THERE is closing the door in the seat belt tab. Happens ALL THE TIME on many cars No recourse there ...
