Boy or boy, what an interesting thread. Almost the exact same thing happened to my wife today. Needless to say, she's stressed to the max and now wants nothing to do with our 06 Rav. It's currently at the local dealer and we'll be waiting for the prognosis tomorrow. Sounds like we need to make sure a full inspection occurs. Our mileage? We just hit 56K.
Any suggestions on how we should approach Toyota would be greatly appreciated.

I had this happen to a family member's Avalon with the same engine as yours. I ordered a vvti oil line from an 2009 model (which is all metal) and installed it, all is well now.
*update* I also posted on rav4world. Service is complete (no charge). No signs of engine damage, however they replaced the vvti hose with the same part. I informed the rep that the all-metal tube (part #15772-31030) should be used instead. He went on to say that Toyota wouldn't pay for the repair a 2nd time ($40 part with $1200 labor) and that the defective part is considered 3yr 36k normal wear and tear part. :?: Long story short, if it happens again, I'm effed. Calling Toyota today. Completely unacceptable.

Yes, toyota will pay for a second/3rd/4th or however many repairs if it fails in the 5yr/60k warranty
That tube is power train and is internally lubricated, therefore it qualifies for the 5/60 power train.
It even says so on the 05 Avalon TSB
Your not EFFD, he is mistaken

Thanks for the info mustang67408. I mentioned above that I'm at 56k right now so hopefully it'll before the next 3999 miles .
It's really too bad because I've thoroughly enjoyed this car and now my wife wants to ditch it.

Actually if they are like the other dealers I know, WE have to guarantee our repairs for 1yr unlimited miles. If the part goes bad in that year , then it becomes a PARTS WARRANTY issue. But I could be mistaken.

Well it made it 7 months before another issue came up with the valve train. If you put the engine under a light load the valve train starts knocking like a wood chipper. Sounds exactly like it did when the oil line blew but this time no oil loss.
We were actually at the Grand Canyon when I called my service writer and told him of the issue. I mainly called since we were at 59,804 and I wanted the issue documented. We got it back to SoCal with no issues. The techs had a hard time replicating the issue but I explained to them how to do it at will and they heard it. There's supposed to be another TSB about this issue as well but I'm not sure if it's related to the first failure or not.
Not sure what I'm going to do going forward. I just don't trust the thing and neither does my wife. All my other Toyota's have been great but this one is doomed it seems!
I'll be following this one as well. Wife called this morning (2006 V6 Rav Limited/ 57K) stranded at the local gas station. Oil all down the passenger side all way to the tailights (she drove about 1000' to get out of traffic. She said the car was knocking pretty badly when she parked. No CEL, no oil pressure light, no nothing. Front and rear calipers are soaked in oil.
Had car towed to dealer ($100.00) to have them say it was an oil line failure that they would take care of no charge. They told my wife they'd also steam clean the undercarriage. Will be interesting to see if the engine knocks when we get it back and how the brakes are.
I just got done doing the rack/pinion TSB as well as the JBL disc changer TSB--my 04 Tacoma never had any issues--This will be the last Toyota V6 I buy---Never had this problem with a Honda. Will update soon.
Toyota has finally acknowledged this problem! The have started a "Limited Service Campaign" to fix this VVT-i hose problem. The bad news is the LSC only covers 2005-2006 Avalons and 2006 RAV4's. This could change--according to the LSC: "Toyota is currently investigating how this condition may affect other Toyota and Lexus vehicles."

Wow James (aka junebug1701) - Toyota has really fumbled the ball on this scandal. Toyota Canada notifies 100% of affected vehicles and Toyota USA only notifies 10% of affected vehicles. For anyone surfing the net that has not already viewed it (it's now posted in about 10 threads/forums), go to ToyotaV6OilLineScandal at:
which provides a comprehensive summary (with links to lots of good stuff) of Toyota's bizarre treatment of the defective oil lines. Site started 11/10/09 and has been updated through 11/14/09 to include the Canadian "campaign" (recall) and other juicy tidbits.
