RAV4General discussion forum for the Toyota RAV4.
This is a discussion thread titled "RAV4 Discussion", within the RAV4 forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
We wheren't sure if we wanted a new car yet but when we drove the 2003 rav limited with 16000 km's we bought it right away It would be nice to find a website like this one to get info from as I look here for my Tundra all the time. I'll be watching!
I bought my daughter a 2001 RAV4 L with 37K; looks and runs great. She has noticed (yup, I don't drive it much!!), that when the fuel is down to about 1/4, the tank will read on empty once it set over night and the fuel light stays on even when she knows it has 1/4 tank. It consistently has gotten 22-24 mpg and she's concerned she'll run outta gas one day.
In the meantime, I have suggested she use her trip odometer to judge when to fill up until I can get some input from this forum. The local Toyota dealer thinks ist's a bad gauge. I think it's the sending unit (intregal?). Has anyone ever experienced this with a Toyota? Are the float units intregal?
Thanks.

Just bought my wife a RAV4 in August. Pearl White L with sunroof, 4wd, fender extension and a bunch of other stuff. I have an Audi A4 and we just got blasted with snow. That thing will run circles around my car, and I thought my car went rather well.
She loves the thing. Maybe I'll buy one next time to.
I personally love the design, ride and comfort of the RAV4. But, when you are the "runt" of the family and everyone else is "husky," you need to consider the room for your family. I opted for the Tundra, over other Toyotas, because my last vehicle was a pickup (POS S-10) and as you all know there is just something women like about a pickup man. ;-)
I own a 1996 5 speed RAV4 with moonroof although I think it was still called a sunroof then..
I have some 'slapping' occurring in the rear differential. Some free play in the drivetrain which causes an audible clunk as you change gear. I have read somewhere that it could be wear in the rear universal but a dealer also told me that the propellor shaft may not have a servicable universal on it and I may have to replace the whole prop shaft. Not something I want to do. Does anyone have any info on stripping down the rear diff and replacing the universal if possible. Appreciate any comments.

I recently bought a 2001 Rav 4 and I'm having the same problem with the fuel gauge. Did you find out what the problem was?
New Rav4 owner here, got our new machine in April. Jet black and love the look although tough to keep clean. Anyone know if I can get running boards for it? Toyota doesn't have them and the mud guards are good for looks only. They don't do much.

Nope...never did. I don't drive it..my daughter does; I just maintain it!!!
It seems to be a faulty sending unit, intregal to the fuel tank. You need to drop the tank to access the unit opening on the top of the tank. The gauge still goes wrong at about 1/4 tank or less, more often when it's cold out.
As long as my daughter re-sets the trip odometer and fills between 300 - 325 miles, she's OK. Not worth my trouble at this point in time!!!
Similar to yours?

We don't have one.......yet. I am purchasing a 2003 for my wife next month. Sure would be nice if the RAV4 owners could occupy a section of the TS site.

I have some questions about rav 4 timing belt marks?

You might post your timing belt question under "Engine" forum...not much help with the timing belt, too intregal for me. I bring mine to local Toyota dealer for that ; runs ~ $260.00 plus tax.

I have a RAV4 V6 silver one. I love it and I am glad that my husband and I bought it. I used to have a corolla and I loved it and now that I have a truck I love it even more.
